The Problem
According to Somers, the four reasons that people have trouble fighting fat after forty are:
- Toxins : Toxins can be found in everything from food to bedding. The toxins enter people’s bodies and make it difficult to lose weight.
- Imbalanced hormones : When people age, their hormones change. These changes can make it difficult, if not impossible, to lose weight.
- Gut disturbances : Stomach problems and disturbances are a sign that something serious is wrong with the person. Once these issues are addressed, people can begin to fight fat and lose weight.
- Food intolerances : Food intolerances and allergies cause bloating and make it difficult to lose weight. Somers says people can have these intolerances without realizing it, which is why so many people are unsuccessful with weight loss.
Identifying and Fixing the Problem
Somers says it is incredibly important for people to find out which problem they suffer from so they can get the help they need. Because of that, she provides readers with information on a blood test they can get to diagnose the problem. Once they receive the results of the blood test, they can use her resource guide to find a doctor that specializes in that specific problem.
Three-Phase Weight Loss Plan
According to Somers, identifying and controlling the weight loss obstacle is not the enough when fighting the battle of the bulge. People also need to follow her three-phase weight loss plan. The plan was designed to help people reach and maintain their goal weight by detoxifying the body and getting it on track with proper nutrition. This plan goes through three phases, which are:
- Detoxification Phase - This phase eliminates those toxins and chemicals that people have in their bodies. Even if toxins were not the main obstacle in someone’s weight loss journey, she still recommends eliminating toxins in order to get healthy.
- Weight Loss Phase - This phase helps people reach their goal weights.
- Lifestyle Phase - This phase teaches people everything they need to know in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

While the main purpose of the book is to help people get healthy, Somers does more than provide people with a plan. She also includes information on chemicals to avoid, foods to eat and recipes to follow. This information is intended to help people get healthy when they lose weight.
