Introduction
Resveratrol, a natural compound found in grapes, has been linked to many health benefits. Studies now show that it can increase your metabolism, which can have a very positive impact on your health, as well as your weight loss efforts.
Why Boost your Metabolism?
Boosting your metabolism will help to increase your body's ability to burn calories and increase energy levels. Calories are considered to be an important source of energy for maintaining your body. Metabolism is the process of burning this energy. Your body is working every second of the day to ensure that the calories you are burning are fueling your body. A basic level of energy is essential for your body to operate and to process important minerals and nutrients necessary for overall health.
People with a high level of muscle mass generally have a high metabolism. These people need a high level of energy to remain strong and healthy. People with a high level of fat tend to have a slower metabolism because the fat tissues and cells in the body do not require as much energy. Metabolism is important for helping you to maintain a healthy weight, which is extremely important for preventing many diseases linked with obesity.

Why boost your metabolism? Basically, you will need to take steps to boost your metabolism for a healthy body. As you age, you lose that "natural boost" your metabolism provided when you were younger. Therefore, you will need to develop a new routine to improve your metabolism so that you can maintain or lose weight, if necessary. While there are many things you can do to boost your metabolism, the addition of resveratrol has been proven to improve metabolism.
Resveratrol and Metabolism: The Study
Resveratrol has been the focus of study with researchers for many health benefits, including anti-aging. Recently, a study has been released proving the impact it has on men and metabolism. The following study was published in the November 2, 2011 issue of Cell Metabolism (doi:10.1016/j.cmet.2011.10.002).
11 obese but seemingly healthy men were given 150 milligrams in supplement form each day. While this natural compound can be found in red wine, it would take a couple of gallons of wine per day to get this dosage.
Their findings concluded that this supplement mimicked the effects of a low calorie diet by reducing energy expenditure and improving metabolism. Why is this important? Energy expenditure needs to be in balance with your caloric intake to maintain a healthy body weight, as well as for overall health.
More findings:
• Reduced fat in the liver
• Lower blood pressure
• Lower blood sugar
• Changes in how muscles burn fat
The study showed that their cells were functioning more efficiently as expected on a calorie restricted diet. The men did not experience any serious side effects.
More studies need to be done to determine the long-term benefits this natural compound has on your health. According to Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, the long-term effects of resveratrol supplements are not yet known.
Katz said, "Perhaps effects wear off with time. Perhaps adverse aspects of altered gene expression show up late. We have leapt before without looking carefully enough, and should proceed with caution and care."
Although this is the case, he does explain that the study shows that this is a natural compound that can have "profound effects on metabolism, weight, and genes in humans." However, resveratrol is not only effective at boosting your metabolism, but can improve your overall health.
Beware of Resveratrol Scams: Choose a Quality Supplement
With the increase in popularity comes the increase of people ready to take advantage of you. It is important to understand that there are many companies marketing ineffective products that contain a lot of fillers and very low amounts of resveratrol.
You will want to look at the ingredients in the supplement before purchasing. Do not fall for their advertising schemes. Research the company and the ingredients listed. Find out what their purpose is in the product.
Make sure that when you read the ingredients that resveratrol is not just listed as an extract from foods that are supposed to contain resveratrol. Foods that do contain resveratrol, such as nuts, grapes, peanuts, cranberries, raspberries, red wine, etc. only contain small amounts and are not going to provide the health benefits you are expecting.
Is Resveratrol a miracle supplement?
Is resveratrol to be considered a "miracle supplement?" Probably not; however, it does seem to provide some amazing health benefits. It is likely researchers will continue to study this natural compound to find out what more it can provide. In the meantime, resveratrol may be something you will want to add to your daily health routine.
