TOPIC: Tanita Bodyfat Scales

Is anyone else using a Tanita scale to help monitor their progress?
I don't know what to make of my results so far. I'm 6'3", and started the program at 184 lbs and 16.8% bodyfat, according to the Tanita scale. I'm nearing the 45 day mark, and my weight is around 187 lbs (good because I want to gain muscle), but the scale reads anywhere between 14.7% BF to 15.9% bodyfat. I know hydration plays a major role in how those scales work, but that seems like a big deviation and I'm having a hard time judging if I'm making progress on the bodyfat front. Any thoughts/suggestions? Legs/Back after work today. Woo hoo. |

I have a weight-watchers bf scale. Don't know who makes it but it tells you BMI, H20 and bone denisty, too.
Is it accuarate? I'm not sure but there are no major swings in the numbers for the most part. I think it's pretty close. It's ok to take the measurments everyday (I do) just don't read too much into them. Look at the numbers once a week and you should see the downward trend. It's hard to not focus on the daily numbers espeically in a 90 day programme like this. You so want to see those numbers go down each day. Unfortunately, for most of us though, it just doesn't work that way. 2 steps forward, 1 step back kinda thing. |

Thanks, that is helpful to keep in mind and to remember it is more of a process than a destination.

I have to agree with stick legs on this one. I also use a BF scale (not sure on the brand though). It tells me weight, BMI, BF%, H2O, RMR….. I also get varying numbers day to day, but over the course of the first 35 days of the program the numbers trend lower than what I started with. This thread actually just gave me the idea to throw the numbers into excel and track them with a line graph or something. That would give a pretty good visual representation of where you’re heading. But like stick said, take each daily reading with a grain of salt as there are many factors in the human body that could cause a deviation from one day to the next.

My Homedics BF scale is kind of bizarre too. For consistency, I try to weigh myself everyday right after I wake up and pee (so I have about the same amount of water inside). I really don't know how accurate any of the body fat scales are since my scale will tell me that I have 28-30% BF and I've tried one of the ones you grip also, and that one said 14-16% BF. That is a huge difference...

The accuracy of home body fat scales has always been in question. However, if you use the scale for a "relative" measurement, then at least you can see if you are going in the right direction.
