went to costco today found a great protein drink 3 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
I was trying to figure out what I could bring to work that would"keep" and would stash easily in my desk as work for those 6 meals. well i found a gem of adrink. It made by Premire Nutrition. Its a 11oz chocolate shake ina cardboard can. Its got 30g of whey protien, 3gs of fat, 5g of carbs. 25% of all daily vitamins and a bunch of other stuff. also 160 calories and 30 fat calories in one can. I got a wholebox. Pretty cheap too.

Thats great and all but I see a major problem with that. With all that protein and vitamins? How are you going to regulate your diet but still maintaining your calorie level and not going over your protein, vitamins, ect...

Thats one thing that gets alot of people, seeing a product with all these pluses but not seeing how it's going to factor your diet. Thats why a lot of companies sell them cheap because body builders don't want them.

Remember active means 1800-2200 calories

Presuming that is nutritional facts for one serving. And seeing from what I can from the website it is.

Drink three serving a day... (Usually people will drink six)

90g protein consumed
9g of fat
5g of carbs
75% of your vitamins
But only 480 calories consumed!!

Drink your six... big red flag here is that you just took 150% of your vitamin intake. Now some vitamins are water soluable so it's "safe". But some are fat soluable and extra gets turned into fat.

You still have at least 1320 more calories to go! So if you are going to drink it for six meals.... Your going to give yourself a heart attack when you exercise.

If you are going to use protein shakes for a meal replacement. The product you need is a weight gainer. There are many types out there. And just add to it what you need.

And i'm not just talking to BigFoot by any means. I know there are alot of people who do this and do not realize what they are doing to their body. This can actually make you fatter do to something I call the sponge effect.

More you starve something the more your body is going to conserve it and hold on to it. Exercising is like ringing out the sponge, most of it will come out but not all of it. The more you starve your body the bigger the sponge will get and the harder to "ring it out." Dormant calories, protein, vitamins, and glucose turned into fat.

So for the sake of your body and the results you are working hard for. Be very careful of what you buy and how you are going to work it into your diet.

Very true. I have spoken in the past about finding bars and whey protein shakes that were lowest in fat, carbs etc. The important factor is these supplement my "real" food intake, not replace.
I try to eat breakfast lunch and dinner as real food meals.
I will have a myoplex lite bar or a small piece of fruit as a morning or afternoon snack. I have a whey protein shake with skim milk when I feel I need a pickmeup. Should mix that with water but I am losing weight this way.

After I get to my goal weight and want to pack on size I will switch from the myoplex lite bars to something "richer" like muscle milk.

It all depends on what your long term goals are with or without P90X.

"Now some vitamins are water soluable so it's "safe". But some are fat soluable and extra gets turned into fat."
I have to correct you on this so that you don't spread false facts. Vitamins do not get turned into fats. It biologically impossible. vitatmins are not food. They don't really have a caloric value. Water soluable vitaminsn that your body doesnt use leaved your body via your urine and to a small extent, your sweat. Fat soluable vitamins that arent used to aid other enzymatic processes are stored in existing fat deposits to be used later whe the body needs them.

"Dormant calories, protein, vitamins, and glucose turned into fat."
No such thing as dormant calories, vitamins or glucose.Vitamins again, cannot become fat. Glucose a simple sugar and protien can.

Now, I work in a nutricuetical lab. I've had my share of endocrinology and clinical nutrition classes. Since I work in a lab I cant bring in a big open lunch. I was looking for some extra protein shake that would store easily that I could take once during the work day before or after lunch time. Thats all. No freaking way would I drink it 6 times a day. Thats crazy talk your spouting, son. Im looking to trim out some and biuld muscle. So, no way would I take 180grams of protein per day. I dont really need to damage my liver and have my kidneys shut down. 50 to 80 grams of protein per day is my window.

I know you are just trying to help and I appreciate it. thanks

Well ok, I see what your saying and I can get into the whole chemical process as well but I tried to explain in a way that everyone could understand.

And I don't know why I said glucose turns into fat. It just goes into your urine.

You made it seem like you were going to take that shake 6 times a day. But still 50-80 grams put a big kick into your diet plan with that drink no matter how you look at it. and unused vitamins can still make you gain weight. I've seen it first hand.

This post is way off base.

Where did you get this information?

Vitamins turn to fat?

and most people would kill for:

90g protein consumed
9g of fat
5g of carbs
75% of your vitamins
But only 480 calories consumed!!

Thats as good as it gets my man.

Regardless of the source,
4 calories per gram of protein
5 calories per gram of carb
9 calories per gram of fat.

So where do you get the other 1500?

P90X has most of us at the start doing 50% protein, 30% Carb, 20% fat.
So do the math.

For many of us, it would be near impossible to get to 50% of our caloric intake from protein WITHOUT pounding shakes like this.

It's not too hard to get all of your protein from real foods instead of shakes, make sure your counting ALL protein you intake, not just from meat or eggs. In the morning, i have the 10 egg white omelet outlined in the nutrition book with a cup of non-fat yogurt, this alone yields about 75g of protein after you the non-fat cheddar cheese to the omelet, etc.

If you follow the nutrition guideline, as outlined, you can hit all of your requirements by just going by their portion approach. I fall into the level 3 category and was able to hit my 9 servings of protein daily (3,000 calories is my goal for lvl III). As a snack, 6oz of Tuna & 2oz of string cheese gives you near 60g of protein, your recovery drink / bar that is said to be had also gives you around 40g depending on the product. It all adds up, count protein from bread, oats, milk, yogurt, cheese, everything.

Also, aiming for the lowest means of calories isn't always the best route to take, don't forget you can just as easily go under your target calories just like you can go over them.

I do shakes 3x/day
and I eat regular food too.
My goal in P90X is 250gms of protein.
The only way to get there for me is with shake supplements.
