My start date is this Saturday and I am still trying to get my head around the nutritionB) I read all of Pauly's thread on his diet and have arrived at the conclusion that it would be best to just use "MyPlate" to enter everything and get the ratio's. Someone please advise if this is the best way to go?

I have read quite a few posts on this but still have not been able to figure out the 50/30/20 rule? Does this basically mean that in a day, 50% of my entire day's meal should comprise of proteins, 30% Carbs and 20% Fat?

The pie chart in MyPlate that shows the percentage breakup, is that the exact chart I should be monitoring as far as this percentage breakup goes? I noticed that on MyPlate it calculates that based on the daily caloric intake, in my case I have set it to 2000.

What does this 50/30/20 equate to in grams or should I not even be worrying about that?

Someone please help me understand this.

Thanks.

I just enter everything into myplate and try to get that pie chart as close to the correct percentages as possible. Once you get it there you will see that it's pretty easy and you will learn what foods effect your chart how. I do look at my grams just to see how different foods are going to effect my pie chart though.

Thanks. So altogether dump the "Portion Plan" which counts blocks and just use "MyPlate"?

keep in mind the percentages refer to the percentage of total daily calories for each macro-nutrient (protein, carb, fat). So, 50% of your daily calories should be coming from protein, etc.

with that said, how many grams of each will vary, depending on what your daily caloric needs are. but just to give you an example: if you require 2000 calories in one day that means:

1000 calories from protein
600 calories from carbs
400 calories from fat

Since there are 4 calories per gram of carb and protein, and 9 calories per gram of fat, that means your daily breakdown would be:

250 grams of protein
150 grams of carbs
about 45 grams of fat

again, the above example is for a 2000 calorie diet. adjust it as necessary if you have less or more calories.

hope this helps.

Great. Thanks a lot. That makes total sense now. Does "MyPlate" use the same method to make the Pie Chart for Proteins, Carb and Fat? Can I just use that to get my percentages?

Thanks.
