Hi everyone,

I loved using mayonnaise as a dipping sauce for artichokes, but ever since I started the P90X diet, I stopped using the stuff. But just recently I looked at the nutrition info for mayo now that I have a better understanding of nutrition:

1 Serving:
90 calories
10 grams fat (1.5 saturated, 2.5 mono, 6 poly)
5 mg cholesterol
90 mg sodium
0 carbs
0 protein

This astounded me....I always though mayonnaise was super unhealthy, but this is saying that while it is mostly fat, it's good fat! Sure, monounsaturated fat may be better than polyunsaturated, but it's still not high in either saturated or trans fat. Plus it isn't high in cholesterol or sodium.

So is it true that mayonnaise really isn't that unhealthy? Obviously it pretty much all fat, but as long as you're watching your fat percentages and taking it into account, would it really be that bad to eat mayonnaise? And I'm talking about the real stuff here, not light mayonnaise, which probably contains nasty high fructose corn syrup.

Last time I was at the store, I saw some olive oil-based mayo's which would probably make it a bit better for you. I've tried the Smart Balance mayo before also and it's not too bad. It even contains a decent amount of Omega-3s.

I don't have the nutrition book by my side, but I'm pretty sure one of the recipes included mayonnaise. (Tuna sandwich or something....Tuna with Mayo).

As long as you're not stuffing your face with it, I don't see the harm. You looked at the ingredients, and there is a BIG difference between the "types" of fat. Yes...."fat is fat" but obviously there are different types.

Just don't finish the whole bottle in one sitting

Mmm...homemade mayonnaise is one of my favorites. I love it on artichokes too. If you don't want to buy the jar stuff, it's super easy to make and you might never go back. Egg yolks, lemon juice, oil, and salt.

true- per serving its not bad. but i believe a serving is 1 tablespoon. which is a relatively small amount (when it comes to putting it in things like chicken and tuna salads). As Hawks mentioned, just dont go finishing the whole thing...haha.
