5'11"
240 lbs Completely out of shape and starting P90x on Monday Totally ignorant about nutrition and fitness According to the nutrition guide and all the spreadsheets I've encountered, as well as the BMI calculator found on www.nutritiondata.com/ , I should be eating up to 3000 calories a day. Could this be right? That seems excessive to me and I can't see how I'm going to lose weight if I'm consuming so much in a day. |

How old are you? I'm guessing you are already in decent shape, and at 240 pounds that seems about right to me. Also, do you have an active lifestyle/career? That could contribute to the high calorie amount.

I'm 28 and I am completely OUT of shape. Since July of last year I've put on 50lbs because of terrible nutrition (eating out everyday for 3 meals a day) and because I quit smoking. On top of that I work a desk job for 8 hours a day. I'm planning on starting P90x on Monday and have been doing a bunch of research before the big day.

At first 3000 calories WILL seem like a lot. However, for me, it was hard to stay BELOW by around day 50 because of the doubles routine. There were days I was hitting 3200 and even 3500 all the while still losing weight.

Yeah, I am of similar size and I take in around 1500 calories a day. Most of the time I don't feel hungry. I am not tired or exhausted besides after my workout. I think if you really want to cut you have to find a good threshold for you and stay below it.
Just make sure you are getting close to the high protein amount you want. Try and find a good solid routine you can stick to and don't deviate from it. You can check out my log and it might help you but please don't copy it because it's probably not that great. I need to take in a lot more vegetables. Good baseline for you though. Goodluck man. Oh yeah btw I am sure you will still lose a good bit of weight doing the program and sticking to 3k calories but remember this program isn't so much for cutting fat. This is just an insane workout program to get into the best shape of your life. Cutting fat is just a by product. You can tweak that by product to be as large a factor as you want. Bear |

I am 5'10" and weigh 240. I'm not out of shape too bad. But I'm not in good shape either.
I put all my food intake for the last two days into www.fitday.com today. I had 2400 calories yesterday and 3000 today. It seemed like I ate a lot today but it was a lot of fun too. The steak was probably the extra 600 today. For example, I love avocados - I knew they have good fats in them but didn't realize the number of calories. Probably a great snack for someone working out on a program like P90X. |
