Biggest Loser - Season 8 6 Months ago Karma: 1
I am a Biggest Loser junkie. That show just motivates me.

I am thrilled to see Daniel back this season. So far, I am liking all of the contestants. Abby certainly has the most compelling story.

The amount of weight dropped that first week is stunning!

Coco, it's going to be a good one.

Glenn, I put off watching that show for 7 seasons. The name alone turned me off. My daughter was watching one day - I walked in - I've been hooked ever since.

I will say Jillian (female trainer) sure did get bleeped alot last night. I hope she is not going total vulgar butch.

jillian gets me sometimes. she tries to be too much, at least more than what she is, a trainer. she tries to play psychologist too, which she's not really there to do, but i guess that plays into the whole diet/exercise/weight loss game. but the facts speak for themselves i guess, i think practically every winner so far has been trained by her.

It is indeed a great show. I agree about Abby. It seems everytime she was on the camera it brought tears. TO my wifes eyes of course not mine. J/K

I agree so far I am really liking this season. I hope that these people really hang in there and keep the weight off. From what I understand an extremely high percentage do not.

The show should be based on fat% loss, not weight loss. Sending the wrong message to millions of people every week! Also many of the lifts they perform have HORRIBLE form. Not surprised there are lots of injuries during their stay.

... but yes, it also teaches some halfway decent habits and may motivate some who can identify with the stories.

Rick, i used to think the same thing. but think about it, at those sizes and weights, and loss which is NOT fat is going to be minimal. and at those levels, your only concern should be seeing that number on the scale come down.

Rick, I think (at this point) their form can only be so good. Their form improves as their mass gets smaller.

Re:Biggest Loser - Season 8 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 2
I've watched most seasons for entertainment value (I really do enjoy much of the show). Where it really becomes apparent is in the later game where they go to extremes to 'win'. Competition is a great motivator, but some of the contestants have admitted they went on liquid diets consisting of lemon juice and cayenne pepper for weeks leading up to the finale. They dehydrate themselves to 'make weight' like a boxer might.

Conventional wisdom dictates a loss of 1-2 pounds per week is healthy and will put you in a position for long-term success. I would LOVE to see a real scientific study on the contestants on the Biggest Loser show to see how many end with low bodyfat percentages and how many remain in a healthy weight range long-term. I just have this nagging suspicion that most of them revert to bad habits and their bodies regain much of that weight after the show.

It sends mixed messages, at best. Sure it motivates people who might be obese or needing to lose 30+ pounds, but I bet many are then disappointed when they feel like they've worked their butts off for weeks and only dropped 10 pounds whereas Biggest Loser people have dropped 50 pounds in that same time. I am guessing many then get disappointed and go back to old habits!

Re:Biggest Loser - Season 8 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 1
Just a heads up:

Today I received my copy of Jillian Michael's new book "Master Your Metabolism, The 3 DIET Secrets to Naturally Balancing Your Hormones for a Hot and Healthy Body."

I'm almost through chapter 2, though I've browsed most of it. So far, this easy to read book is full of necessary information. If you want to understand the vital role your hormones play in this whole weight loss/health/fitness/aging game and how you can get your body back on track (assuming it's off track)- this is a definite must read.

This is not a diet book. No counting calories or any such nonsense. This book teaches you how to eat properly (even down to choosing the right foods and where to find them) and how particular food choices affect your body on a cellular level.

It's a good read. Easily understandable and very informative. So, if you want to know what works and why - pick up your copy today.

Hmm... in light of the new FCC regulations I must disclose that I am NOT in any way, shape or form being compensated for my brief review and endorsement of this book. Hell, I even had to buy my own copy.

That's good to hear, I really respect Jillian. She states she does what she can within the rules and regulations of the show and makes the best of it for her students. I think she's incredibly knowledgable and might think about picking it up. Usually when I hear hormones and metabolism I wonder if it's pseudo-science or not -- what's your take on it so far?

Re:Biggest Loser - Season 8 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 1
I have a strong history in anatomy and physiology - though I've forgotten much of it.

Anyway, she's dead on and doing a great job of informing and putting pieces together. She gives great information and tells you what to do with it.

Here's a taste:

Discussing Insulin- all typos and left out words are human error.

QUOTE:
Insulin's most important function is to lower the concentration of glucose in your blood. Shortly after you eat food, especially high processed carbohydrates, your meal is broken down into simple sugars and released into the bloodstream. Within minutes, the pancreas pumps out a series of insulin surges. Insulin then ushers those sugars directly into the liver, where they are converted into glycogen for use by the muscles. Insulin also helps turn glucose into fatty acids and ushers them into fat cells, where they can be stored as fuel to be tapped later. Both of these activities lower the concentration of sugar in the blood, which is very important...

For example, let's say you had a Milky Way on an empty stomach. Your blood sugar surge is then so dramatic that insulin overreacts and works twice as hard to clean the sugar out of the blood. This overefficient sugar removal doesn't leave enough glucose circulating in your bloodstream, so your blood sugar concentration drops, you feel hungry again, and you crave (and probably eat) more carbs. That's the postsugar "crash-and-binge" cycle, the root of sugar addiction.
