get 5's and 8's and 10's, then increas by 5's from there on out (15, 20, 25, 30, etc). I'd recommend 5's-30's to start, and as you get stronger you'll want to buy all the way out to 50's and maybe even more. Like vici said, it's all about body type, size, sex, etc.

If you go the cash Bowflex makes a great product, but be ready to drop about $400.

I wish i could get the Bowflex dumbbells, those things are nice but very expensive. I think ima get them soon for P90X+ cause its much faster paced and i have the golds gym adjustables and they take about 15s to switch out the weight plates.

The best way to know is:
1) what do you want to do?
bulk up in muscle mass (low repitition 8-10 with high weights)
get toned. (high repetitions with a lower weight)

2)After deciding above ask yourself where do i stand?
best way to answer this is this. Look at the exercises and try them out with weights either at home or at your sports good actually using the weights and also if you lifted weights before use past experience.

When doing this which ever you choose bulk or lean. Make sure that on your last two repetitions you are actually working hard for it. If you have a weight that's to easy than go higher.

3) Usually most exercises in the weight that you need to use vary from 5-10lbs.
Now if your work requires you to actually do heavy lifting and only do certain movements than the case would be different.

Well hope this helps.

WalMart has some pretty good dumbells. Nice-padded grip, easy change out. There is a "Star" type nut that screws down & holds the plates firmly in place.

You can pick up plates from 2 1/2 lbs - 10 lbs. Plently of room to pump that bad boy up to about a 50+ pounder.

Some of the reps will be 16, no matter what your doing mass or tone. You'll want to be able to adjust weights seemlessly. Or, you'll be hitting pause a bunch.

I recommend 4 dunbells that way you can set up a light to moderate and a heavy. You'll figure it out when you determine your levels for resistance.

Also, the dumbells at WalMart are about as cheap as you can go. Just about every budget can get you some plates & at least (2) dumbells.

The friggen stand for some of these "select-dial a weight" is $179.00+. WTF. Bending over & changing the weight out is better for you anyway.

Yeah I think we all would love some of those Bowflex adjustable dumbells. I don't like how HUGE they are, though. I know they have to be to get the full 62.5 lbs (I think.) Seriously though, they're gigantic.

I started with a set of 10s, 15s and 25s. I am about to buy 35s or 40s. I need more weight for lawnmowers, etc. I'm doing 15 or 20 just to get a good burn with 25s. I like to make bigger jumps in my weights so I don't have to buy so many.

I have found garage sales to be the absolute best place to buy dumbbells. Sometimes you get lucky and other times you don't. Walmart is second unless you know of a good scratch and dent place. They always have good deals.

Was shopping around for the 1020 select tech 2010 version(5-91 lbs) and i think im going to get them very soon. for lawnmowers my reps are so high and im using 45's(highest weight i have so far) so if i jump up to 60 lbs i think ill be good to stay in the 8-10 range.

I bought the 5-50lb powerblocks and I'm maxing those for my lawnmowers. The great thing about the powerblocks is that unlike other adjustables, I can buy an expansion up to 90lbs without having to buy a whole new adjustable dumbbell. Plus they're pretty compact, especially compared to the selectechs.

I have found that the WEGG is a great solution for my P90X workouts.

I struggled with which adjustable dumbbells to buy or buying more dumbbells. More dumbbells meant more space taken up. I had 5 to 35 and needed more weight. Getting the WEGG got me to where I can add small amounts to the weights I already have and put off buying any more for the time being.

It is important to write down workouts and seeing progress charted. It is a real motivator. Before the WEGG there were days that I just could not add another 5 pounds to the weight for a real burn. Now I can add 1.25 and up do 22.5 pounds to the dumbbell I already OWN. I really like seeing the graph showing progress on even the "so so feeling" days.

One thing though, do not get your fingers between the two magnets. They are seriously strong. Seriously.

I would only get the Beginner's Kit along with your local Walmart purchase.
