This summer I ran and swam alot. I have never been good at figuring this stuff out though. About how many calories do you burn while swimming?

According to my iphone app:

30 mins of breaststroke= 482 calories.

Anything more or less just do the math on it.

you can get more calorie bang for your minute buck by doing intervals in that time. you could alternate an all out sprint (or the fastest you can sustain for a minute) and jog/walking every 30-60 seconds. since a mile should roughly take you 10 min (for a beginner/non-runner), you should get in 4 to 5 good sprints in that time.

this would be better (calorie burn wise) vs. doing steady state for 10 min.

HIIT sprints, for total cardio work out nothing is better IMO.. Less time consuming as well..

I agree with the HIIT people. You could start out small say 6 HIIT sets of 20 sec sprint(70% max) 30 second walk. Make sure to do a warm up and cool down.

As you progress you can add intensity by upping your pace and increasing sets or adjusting your intervals.
