In short, AWESOME work out program! But here are my impressions so far.
Just a quick bio of me since you know where I'm coming from... Male Age: 41 Height: 5'9" Weight: 178 (Since I do alot of cycling I carry a lot of weight in my thighs) General Physical codition: pretty good, I'm an avid cyclist and work out on a weekly basis...but could never loose the luv-handles (I'm adicted to Ben & Jerrys LOL) Anyway here is my overall impression of P90X Chest & Back: Love IT!! Awesome workout. I've always did pushups, but never thought you could take it to this level. I cant do many (ok any) unassisted pull-ups but I'm trying...I do a lot of negative reps...I'll get there. Plyometrics: Great for people in there teens, 20's, and possibly 30's, who like to play "court sports". As for me, despite all the cycling I do, it kills my knees. I'm probably going to replace with Kempo or cycling on this day. Shoulders and Arms: I have bursitis in my left shoulder joint, so overhead presses are painful (it sounds like I'm falling apart LOL). I replaced the alternate presses with lateral shoulder exercises (Tony says to modify, so I did). Biceps and triceps could not ask for anything better. Great workout! Yoga X: WHY DID'NT I DO THIS EARLIER IN LIFE? I love Yoga! In fact, If I take nothing from this system (which is highly doubtfull), it'll be the benefits of Yoga. I can see me doing Yoga for the rest of my life, it's that great. I'm even doing the yoga on the FitTv channel. Legs and Back: Awesome! I can feel it in my cycling already. I did a quick 25 mile ride this morning and my legs were strong and ended strong (BTW this was my first ride in a month). Perfect exercises for legs! KempoX: eh...it's ok. I was'nt impressed, but it was fun nonetheless. At least it's fairly low-impact which is good for my knees. I can see myself doing this as replacment to plyo. Ab RipperX: WOW. I sucked at first but geting better. I was going to do this in the morning, but why would anyone get out of bed to punish themselves like this...LOL. I do it when I get home from work and BEFORE I workout. Oh, also do this on an empty stomach! DietX (I just through the X in there): I'm using the portion approach Phase 1 level II, and supplementing with protein shakes. I ate way to many carbs in the past and have high triglycerides levels. So this diet with Lovaza (Omega-3) perscribed by my doctor will hopefully get my triglyceride level down. It's a challenge, but I'm able to follow the diet quite well. Protein really helps with the afternoon cravings! I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the program! I hope this is usefull info for anyone wanting to try P90X or are just beginning. Definitely worh the money...not a TV gimik. |

I am on Day 59 and share almost identical sentiments as you, except for Plyo. What I decided to do (I'm 52 and in pretty solid shape) was delay Plyo until Phase Two (I substituted Cardio X for it temporarily). This delay ended up being pretty critical for me as I can do all the routines without extra breaks or poor form. Also, I watch my height on the jumps, land (always) on my toes, and modify as Pam does on the DVD, at least in certain cases. Overall, Plyo is by far the best aerobics work I've done.

Howdy!
On Day 25 myself and mostly share your sentiments. I am 44 so not exactly a young pup (although beginning to feel like one again LOL). I have had knee issues in the past so was worried especially about Plyo & Legs/Back workouts (have always avoided squats and lunges). I have found wearing a compressive knee brace with open knee cap helps a ton (at least with my particular issues). I am able to do both workouts with no pain/swelling, and now I feel myself getting stronger in these areas which seems to be actually helping the knees!!! I have stuck to the nutrition plan about 80% I'd say (carbs are still too high some days). I am watching my caloric intake and running a slight deficit (not enough to adversely affect energy level). I have managed to lose 9 pounds so far, so it's all good so far! |

Like daveP90X, I am 52 also. I am on day 70 (it's my rest day = yippeee)! Anyway... Pip, I like your review of the workouts.
Fortunately my knees are in pretty good shape so I am doing Plyo. I also do P90X+ Interval X Plus which is very plyo-like. Pip... so you are a cyclist. I am just started to get interested in cycling because getting fit with P90X has given me the urge to try a short triathlon. I just got a new Trek, a bike computer, Look pedals and new bike shoes. Right now I am concentrating on my running. However, I am slowly adding the cycling to the mix (all the while doing P90X). Good luck on your P90X journey. |

Thanks for the comments! I should amend my Plyo review to say that it IS a very effective and fun workout. You guys inspired me to go buy the knee brace to see if that'll help any. I dont like quiting...
Boomer sounds like your half-way there to doing the triathlon with the P90x+ workouts. I used to do short road races back in the day, but now I cycle for strictly for pleasure. I ride a recumbent trike (Catrike) and LOVE IT. Give me a 20+ mile rail-to-trail and I'm set. I'm going to try the knee brace and see how it works... Phillip |
