Starting soon, help me decide! 4 Months ago Karma: 0
After reading countless websites, forums, threads and even referring to the p90x documents themselves, I STILL cannot decide on Lean or Classic p90x. Mostly because i have not seen results from Lean to compare to those of Classic!

I am a pretty fit male, 5'7" 145 lbs and I'm aiming to achieve that really toned/cut look. Not necessarily trying to get bulky.

So far the Classic version proves to be very confusing for me, because everywhere I look it just tells me I can do more reps with lesser weights to achieve that lean/toned look instead of using heavier weights/fewer reps for a more bulky/bigger-mass look.

They're both great work outs I'm sure, but I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time on the Lean version.

I'm definitely trying to fall somewhere in between these two:

Hoping for some good feedback, thanks!

Just do the classic version and forget about it. The whole program was built for the classic....my wife is doing the lean version and it is just P90X lite. Don't know about you...but I want the max results. Plus, the workout is extremely challenging, you have to bring it.

Yeah, after much searching I decided to start out with the Classic. Just got through the entire routine, pretty good stuff. I'd been doing ab ripper X for a while so that was really natural and sort of easy. Though doing the chest+back work outs just prior to ab ripper definitely added a bit of a kick to it.

Thanks for the response! And if anyone else has any additional input, PLEASE I'd love to read/hear it!

Lean is a waste of time.

Well I can't say its a complete waste, but you have to do it for the right reasons. "trying to stay lean" is not one of the reasons to do the Lean version.

Honestly, they need to rename the "Lean" version to "P90X Lite" or "Pre-P90X", because thats all it is. Classic will burn more fat and tone you faster than the lean version will any day and on any person. If you can't handle Classic, then you can do Lean as a sort of preamble. Don't do it because you think its better for getting lean because its just wrong.

Muscles burn calories more than fat cells do. So, the more muscular you are, the more fat you will burn for doing the same action. Yes, doing Cardio all day will burn off your fat. If you increase your muscle mass and do the same workouts? you will burn even MORE fat. So in the great fat burning equation, the amount of muscle you have is a direct multipler of the fat burned.

Do the math.

I disagree.

Lean is there for a reason. You have to decide for yourself what your needs are personally. I've done Classic and Doubles versions of both P90X and P90X Plus. I've also thrown in One-On-One videos to change things up.

I have all the muscle I want right now. My goal is to keep what I have and slim down further. I'm also getting a knee back into shape after a total joint replacement (non-P90X related). I can re-assess my situation after getting to my goal weight and see what my needs are at that time. But I've had a body fat/muscle analysis done by professional people and I currently have 200 pounds of muscle on my frame. I don't want to haul around any more right now.

Somehow I don't think a beginner has the same muscle mass as you Kevin! We aren't all Gerard Butler at day 1.

Ha! Good point, Tom!

It's nice to have a flexible program like P90X that allows us to cater the plan to suit our needs. Even on the Lean version, Phase I Week 2 for me, Legs and Back was still a killer...my knee is really sore tonight so it's a VERY light Kenpo/Cardio workout tonight and some extra stretching. Also, the Lean version gives you Core every week. What a brute!!

I've lost more weight and inches with the Lean version than Classic. When I can, I'm going for a Lean Doubles style workout just to burn off more fat.

There's a Tony Horton body in all of us...mine's just buried in more lard than I'd like.

Keep up the good work, man!!
