Hi,

ive started doing p90x, but the realities of the program have made me consider some modifications so that it fits more seamlessly into life for me.

as a background, i am someone who plays many different sports. i play hockey, basketball, volleyball and ultimate frisbee all at least once weekly. in the past i would take my three weekly off days and do some strength exercising, essentially doing something active every day.

now, since im trying p90x i can see three different feasible scenarios:
1) maintaining my sports schedule and not changing the p90x schedule, doubling my level of activity 3-4 times a week

2) maintaining my sports schedule, and sticking with p90x routine, but substituting sports with the cardio and rest days, which have me doing a sport and a p90x routine in the same day 1-2 times a week

3) maintaining my sports schedule, and following p90x on off-sport days, without the cardio. so, essentially doing p90x or a sport every day, making it longer to complete p90x, essentially turning it into a 110-120 day program.

option 3 would be best for me, as it would take very little effort to incorporate in my life. i suppose my question is:

given this is a 'muscle confusion' program, how do you think an extra day or two between workouts will affect results?

I think you have to judge it based on how you feel. If you've got the energy, just add P90X classic to your schedule. If you don't, then use one of your other strategies. There's no reason our bodies can't do an extra hour of activity a day...our ancestors worked hard 12 hours a day. But listen to your body and if it starts telling you that you're overtraining then back off some.

EagleRiverDee has great points, all true. Good advise. I especially like her comment on how our ancestors worked hard all day long~and many folks in here still do. Lots of us do more than just P90x in a day. I myself cycle ( bike) some pretty extensive rides ( rode-hills) on somedays. But I do it all in moderation and listen to my body.

Decide what your goals are. If your looking for great results from P90x, theres no shortcuts. You have to 'bring it' each day and especially pay attention to your Nutrition ( because THATS where most results derive from).

I can see you exchanging Plyo for basketball, volleyball because they both close to 'jump training, which is Plyometrics. But I would advise you not to miss Yoga. As active as you are, it will help you recover faster, which also produces better results.

Whatever you do, good luck! Hugs~Kate

Give it a "very good effort"

Like the others you should listen to your body, it's very good at letting you know when you should stop doing something it doesn't like.

what I would do is to commit to P90x for Phase 1 and try and incorporate my sporting schedule and see if I can make it work if not I would stick with P90x and if I feel like it's not answering my needs I'd go back to what I know

If you are doing a lot of cardio already I would say to try to put the lift days in on MON WED FRI with ARX and use your sports as your cardio days. Unless you have a ton of weight to lose you don't need as much cardio IMO. When you lift weights you burn as many calories for a longer period of time then cardio alone. If you expect to see results in the 90 days like the program says then stick to the program 100%. If you just want to slower and progressively increase your health and fitness then do what works best for you.

I agree totally though that you MUST do YOGA. Whether you love it or hate it really is very important for you and will make you a better athlete. Guaranteed
