Recovery Drinks AND protein bars? both at once? 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hey everybody! I am starting the program this week and am confused about the recovery drinks and protein bars. I am planning on using this recipe as my recovery drink (I found it on this forum):

1/2 Cup Strawberry Yogurt

1 to 1.5 scoops of EAS Vanilla Protein Powder (I used 1 scoop during Phase 1 and increased it to 1.5 scoops in Phase 2)

1 Cup frozen strawberries

1 Cup lowfat/skim milk

And drinking this right after I work out, but in the nutrition guide it says a recovery drink and a protein bar. I am in Level 1 and should eat around 1900 calories a day (I am 5'4", weigh 115, and small framed). I am hoping to follow the nutrition plan loosely and aim for a balanced diet; however, I am not buying the P90X supplements and can't decide if I should just have a recovery drink (like above), a protein bar, or both right after working out.

Thanks for any help!!

Hi!

I have just completed phase two of the P90X program. Prior to this I was following the Abs Diet, where the smoothies are great. What you have outlined looks alot like a smoothie. I would say that if this does the trick for you, no need to worry about the recovery drink. I would say though that your smoothie has less carbs in it than the recovery drink and its likely less calories.

I have found that the recovery drink counterbalances the low carb diet in phase one. For me personally, I'm less productive when working out without carbs in the system (the recovery drink is high in carbohydrate and also contains protein. Also, soreness seems to be the norm for most in phase one and the recovery drink helps combat soreness.

I typically don't have the protein bar and the drink together... I use the bar as the meal replacement and use the recovery drink right after the workout, regardless of the time of day. My only exception to this is with the Plyometrics routine - I take the recovery drink before or drink during.

BTW, I use a brand called Endurox sold at GNC stores. This appears to be identical to the P90X drink. Its not cheap but it works well.

with only 1900 calories per day you don't have much to work with. so just have the recovery/smoothies drink. 1 scoop of the protein powder has 23g of protein so you can save your protein bar for snack time.

Thanks to both of you!! I am going to just do a protein shake with some milk to stay within my calories. I am going to follow the 90/10 Diet Plan with added protein for atleast 2 weeks and then decide if it's working or not because I just dont have time (Even on weekends) to make all of those recipes!
