Help! I hate yoga!! 3 Months, 4 Weeks ago Karma: 0
OK, I've been 100% committed to this program and have made it thru all my workouts exc yoga. I hate it!! I pushed myself thru the first week but I'm dreading it tommorow. It's not just this workout. I've tried it before and I just can't get into it.

Any suggestions? I'd rather do plyo twice a week than yoga.

Thanks, Denise

I've replaced cardio x with yoga. I plan on doing the full yoga workout when I lose more weight and can bend properly. The good thing about cardio x is that it has yoga, plyo, kenpo, and core all mixed into to one so you can gradually work your way up to the more difficult yoga workouts.

Hi Denise,

Yoga is definitely an acquired taste...like some of the medications I take!

Still, there is value in doing it. If it's the movements and balance postures that you struggle with, I like Coy's idea of doing Cardio X for awhile. I'd also suggest adding X-Stretch so you can work on your flexibility as well. Cardio/X-stretch together would last about as long as Yoga and you might find it more to your liking. You don't want to pass on stretching and flexibility as they are fundamental to the program and will continue to pay dividends as you get older!

Don't forget to try Yoga again as your endurance builds. I've never been a yoga fan, but I have found value in the program. You may even be able to "roll" into Yoga by doing a few minutes before doing Cardio and then X-Stretch. Play around with it a bit and see what works for you.

Hope this helps...

Kevin

Yoga is very important to this program and really is something important in life. The first few weeks of yoga is very hard and its hard to get your body into some of the moves. But like anything else practice makes perfect, and after you have it figured out you wil come to really enjoy yoga and want to do it more often. So really just get thru the learning phase which could be the entire first month of the program and you will enjoy it.

The one thing that is tough for people is that yoga is 1.5 hrs and its hard to get that amount of time in your schedule. At worst you can break up yoga in two sessions. Do the first 45 minutes (stop right before the balance poses). Then save the remaming 45 minutes for Sunday.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on two things. First of all, I will agree that Yoga is important to the program, but you don't have to do the recommended Yoga workout to learn it. For a lot of people, such as myself, Yoga is almost impossible to do because I cannot bend over and stretch properly due to my body fat. I have noticed progress, but the movements are much more difficult than fitting it into my schedule. Secondly even though Yoga is mostly flexibility and stretching, it still requires you to put resistance on your muscles and that is bad if you do it back to back days. That's like doing normal push ups on Monday and doing decline push ups on Tuesday.

Re:Help! I hate yoga!! 3 Months, 4 Weeks ago Karma: 1
I hated and dreaded Yoga too when I started the program. What I found that helped me was, first of all, learning the moves as the weeks went on and knowing what was to come. The most frustrating thing for me from the routine was just doing downward dog and upward dog for 40 minutes over and over again. Once I knew it was coming though, it went by a lot smoother.

What I did to help me was I dimmed the lights, tried to clear my mind and just go through the workout with a blank brain. The less you think about it the quicker the routine goes by and the more enjoyable it is. I personally never got to liking it much and even missed it more times than I would have liked to, but once I actually got to doing it, it really wasn't as bad as I made myself believe.

It's an important workout and I would suggest you do it, but it's up to you in the end. I definitely got stronger and more flexible because of it though.

Cheers!

Thanks for all your comments! I really appreciate it. I did do yoga today for 25 min and then cardioX. I will continue to push thru and hopefully will begin to enjoy it as I get more flexible. I think the reason I dread it is because the poses are akward to me right now and I feel so clumsy moving from pose to pose.

I did like the idea of keeping the lights low and tuning everything else out. I found it easier to get thru when I did that. Good luck to the rest of you!!

Thanks again!

Glad to hear it, Denise! Hang in there!!

I'm doing Yoga for flexibility and to get ready for a knee replacement (old high school football injury and too much arthritis). I wanted to get flexible before the surgery to speed my recovery after surgery...and my return to P90X, of course!!

We're all in this together, so we'll keep cheering each other forward to greatness.

Sparta-bound!

Hello Denise,

After reading your post very attentively, I find myself wonderring: do you really hate yoga ? Or maybe could it be that this routine is more challenging for you than some others?

If the latter is true, one way to look at it could be: the area where you're most challenged is the one where, with the same amount of training, you will gain the bigger benefit. It's often easier to go from 5 to 15% than from 85 to 95.

It can even be a lucky thing: by simply being at standard with Yoga X, you should be able to raise your overall fitness tremendously.

The Man says it often enough: do your best, forget the rest. Do your best is do good, it doesn't matter how good you're doing in the absolute.

I struggled with Yoga X initially, but this may well be my top one workout, or top 2 after Synergistics. Even with that, my current performance of Half Moon may qualify for Fitness Funniest Videos, believe me

Have fun with Yoga X. It's there for a good reason.

Cheers,

FE,
It's by accepting to get exposed to things we don't understand first that we expand and grow.

Impossible is not a word we like to use in the p90x realm. Sure of course if you have a lot of fat it can be a problem to do certain things. But the goal here is to shed the fat and do the best that we can. So if certain things are too hard now does not mean that they will be too hard later. Just do the best that you can and if you can look yourself in the mirror and believe you did the best you could then thats all anyone can ask for.

Well, I said almost impossible and in the real world realm it is. You can't just jump into bench press and automatically push out 10 reps of 250, even if you impossible isn't in your daily vocabulary. Yoga is no different. And honestly "doing your best" isn't always doing what good. I've only done the Yoga workout once, but by doing Cardio X I noticed that my runner's stance, warrior positions, and upward dog positions are more fluent and crisp. Weird.

You are not alone. Just did yoga for the second time. I't seems as if this workout just drags. I swear it's got to be longer than it says. But it has helped me with my flexability. So I am going to continue doing it.

I agree
It didn't work for me but it is definitely a remedy for time constrained folks
I went though the program twice and never completed Yoga because it's too long.
