hey all.

i did day 1 yesterday. man...this workout is NO JOKE.

but i had a few problems...not with the workout (that totally kicked my butt) but more with my stomach.

i took the gnc whey strawberry flavored protein powder in the morning with soy milk. after i took it, my stomach didn't feel perfect...like something was off. it's the first time i ever took protein powder.

then, in the middle of my chest/back day 1 (around 6pm), i got a little bit of the dry heaves. after i finished the workout, 10 mins later, i took a recovery drink (glass of apple juice w/ 1/2 scoopr protein powder + 1 tspn of glutamine). the shake did not go down great and i wasn't feeling good at this point.

i take a shower...btw, how in the blue heck are you supposed to wash your back when you can't lift your arms over your head? too funny.

anyways, i take my shower, and 20 mins after the shower, i'm leaning over my toilet bowl sending back the recovery drink i just drank 30 minutes prior.

my appetite was spoiled and all i could eat the rest of the night was a 1 cup of brown rice. i couldn't even eat the tuna i had.

now, is this a common thing for guys starting out? secondly, i've never taken protein powder and stuff like that before and it did not sit well with me so can i do this workout w/o taking it?

Are you lactose intolerant? Whey protein comes from milk and some manufacturers leave some of the byproduct. I know the shakes I take have lactose and they are the GNC Chocolate Shake. If not, it still sounds like an acute allergic reaction and no that is not normal to feel like that.

If you want to continue taking protein powder. I would suggest Muscle Milk due to the fact it is easier on the stomach. At least for most people it is.

Hey dj,

Man, that sounds awful!! Sorry to hear you were feeling bad.

I have to say that the nausea/vomiting thing is unusual both with P90X and with the protein shakes or recovery formula. Maybe you've got a virus?

I'd definitely take Day 2 off and lay low and hydrate. If you feel better tomorrow, you might try a "light" week the rest of the week, doing the videos but with 50-70% of your normal intensity and passing any exercise that doesn't feel right at this point. Then, next week, re-start with full intensity.

While you do a light week, play around a bit with the protein drinks. You'll have less of the P90X effect to deal with and you can see what the drinks do to you. There are lots of protein supplements on the market and not all of them are whey or soy based. Also, there are recipes here in the forum for other recovery formulas that could be more palatable.

thanks for the responses.

i really liked the workout and plan to continue today (although not as vigorous). but yeah, i think i will have to play around and find the right protein supplement for me.

but for the time being (until i get those "i'm gonna get sick with protein powder" thoughts out of my head), can i just eat another protein bar and add another protein source (like an extra can of tuna/salmon) in the interim?

you also might want to take a probiotic like Lactobacillus bulgaricus. Here is a product that will help you digest yourfood and stop your pains. On a side note. This stuff makes your body much more effiecient in processing food so you get more use out of the proteins you eat. IE, you get bigger a bit sooner.
