Yoga 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 1
So I was making a pathetic attempt to do yoga the other day and when I was trying to put my feet behind my head, something popped in my neck. It is still sore today. I guess my neck isn't strong enough to hold me up yet. I'm hoping Stretch X will help work out the kinks today, but I'd be glad to know if this has happened to anyone else. Thanks - Big Papa

Well one thing about streching is make sure you are well warmed up before you do it. I like just to take a little run around the block... Maybe a 2 minute run before I start streching.

Also, do not strech to hard. You can pull muscles, and that will put you out of the game for a little bit.

That Yoga move (Plow) is meant for you to put the pressure on your shoulders and not so much on your neck. If you feel too much discomfort or strain on your neck, come out of the move (as Tony advises). Take the moves slow and make sure you do them correctly. Stretching and some Yoga poses can cause injury if you pull too hard.

Actually, my understanding of Plow is that you shouldn't feel ANY strain or pressure on your neck. If you are, you're doing it wrong and are risking some serious injury!

There is no question I was doing it wrong... Maybe one of these days I won't have to kick my legs with all my might just to get them headed in the direction of behind my head. But for now,

Papa,

Please be careful! Not just for you, but for all of us as well. We're in this together and we need you!!

Yoga is about pulling and stretching, not about kicking and grunting. If it doesn't go all the way down this week, give it time. In time, it will. Remember to keep the bulk of the weight on your upper back and shoulders. You can support your back with your hands, which will often put the upper arms flat on the mat, adding to the support.

I side with you in video recording Yoga...in my case, it'd look like a cow on a crutch!! I've been at it for months and I STILL can't touch my feet to the ground in plough!

Kevin

I figure some of these exercises are nearly impossible if you have a significant amount of stomach in the way, . You just can't bend properly with it there. So, I've decided to be patient, do as much of the moves as I can, bend as far as I can, and once the stomach is gone, the rest of the move will fall into place.

A voice of reason.
