What's the target heart rate suppose to be? My resting heart rate was 79, warm up it got up to 160 - 86%, during the video, 172 - 90% & during cool down, 135 - 72%. Is this bad? I've never tracked my heart rate so I'm kind of ignorant on this subject. I also forgot to push the calorie mode on my heart monitor so I don't know how many calories I burned during Plyo.

Here's a website that details some of the heart rate zones:
http://www.brianmac.co.uk/hrm1.htm

You can find plenty more if you do some simple google searches on heart rate. I can't really find any information about what zones to be in anywhere in the P90X Fitness Guide, though.

Anyways, I would avoid being near 90% of your maximum heart rate. The website I linked to called it the Red Line Zone, although it does say it's ok if it's for a very short amount of time.

Thanks for the info, stojakapimp. I don't feel out of shape but I guess my heart rate reading is telling me I'm pushing myself to hard during the workout. I feel like I'm cheating if I don't push myself as hard as I can. It's going to hard for me but if I'm not in the aerobic zone I'm not benefitting, right? Anaerobic does nothing? You aren't burning calories or fat in this zone?

No problem.

I need to do some reading up on it myself, but yeah, I would try to stay in the Aerobic zone. I don't know if it's terrible to be in the Anaerobic zone, but if so, probably for only a short time as well. Sometimes I like to do interval training, which gets your heart rate up really high for a short amount of time, then you rest and let it go low, then repeat.

Anyways, I think in one of the DVD's Tony even says that if you're heart rate is getting too high, then press pause and let it drop back down a little bit before continuing on. As to what those levels are, I'm not sure if he says...

Hello! I started today (Nov 10) and wondering if I can join your group. This is round 2 for me....in a nutshell. I pieced through the program the first time (with a vacation in the middle) and came out with great results. I got lazy for a couple of months and need to get back into it. I have a ton of resources and tips/tricks to share to boost results. The first time through I kept up with a group on this board...in the end 3 of us made it through the program with incredible results. SO...if you don't mind I would like to join in...

Thanks!

Welcome, JB. I'm pretty sure everyone in our group are newbies w/ P90X. Any advice on how to get the best results would be greatly appreciated. Please share your tips & tricks too.

Don't feel bad about pushing "pause", or modifying the routines if you can't do everything. I think the most important thing is to not stop for 90 days, no matter what. You will improve if you just try. At least that's the attitude I'm going with. I haven't worked out in years, so I just do as much as I can. It's funny, I already feel stronger, but sore. My body feels loosened up and ready for more workouts! I don't feel sore at night, just dog tired and ready to crash early - been going to bed around 8PM and asleep by 8:30.

Well I did Plyo tonight (still haven't technically started P90X...will start for real on Monday) and boy did it kick my tail. I wasn't wearing my heart rate monitor, but I knew it was way up there with the way I was breathing. Definitely had to push pause a few times and take a breather. Hopefully my muscles will be a little bit better prepared for next time.

Re:Starting November 9th . . . who wants to join?!?! 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi Everyone!

I actually started p90x last month and got in to it for 3 weeks. Then went on vacation for a week and didn't really comfortable starting phase 2 after missing a whole week. Esp since I'm having such a hard time on the push ups and pull ups.

So here I am starting over.....

Just a little about myself: I'm a 30 yr old stay at home mom (SAHM) to a 4 month old and 3 yr old. Even though I'm home a majority of the day, I have to get up super early to get my workout in! It'm impossible to squeeze it in during the day!

I'm 5'4" 150lbs. 37% body fat. I'm looking to get down to about 125lbs (about 20% body fat).

Did chest & back on monday (my most hated workout!) and did interval X (i have a hard time with Plyo b/c of my knees) today. Looking foward to shoulders and arms tomorrow (my favorite!)

Good luck everyone and glad to see some other ladies on the forum!!

Oooohhhh! I am sore today! Chest and back was great yesterday and I will squeeze in Plyo later on this afternoon. Feels good to be back into the program.

Yes, there is nothing wrong with pushing pause and modifying the workouts. The goal (especially at the beginning) is to get your body used to working out again. Plus, you don't do anyone any good if you hurt yourself and have to drop out. Listen to your body, eat well, and get lots and lots of sleep. By the end of the first week you will be sore from head to toe. I honestly believe that Yoga X is the linchpin to the whole program. Look forward to yoga and it will take about 50% of the soreness out and help you close out the week. Yoga is long...and the first part is extremely tough, but push through and complete. The 45 min of stretching at the end will limber you up nicely.

Another key to the program is eating. On round 1 it took me awhile to dial it in. You have to eat and you have to eat good.

Take your pictures too....it will keep you going after the 30 day mark. Most quit at 30 days and once you see the picts you will see the changes. Also, if you can hang in for 6 weeks then the drastic changes will start to happen.

Off to the zoo!

JB

Hey guys, I'm new here and just began the p90x this past Monday with my girl friend. I am on classic and she is doing lean. I was hoping to be part of this group and share my insight on the program. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Welcome mp2437 - we'll be glad to have you.

I'm really pleased to see how many we have starting. I hope we can all finish together as well.

I am doing Shoulders & Arms and ARX tonight, and thank god that doesn't involve any lower body movement. I'm not sure if it is my form, but my upper legs (right where legs attach to hip, near groin) are absolutely en fuego.

My diet has been good so far, except I've pretty much eaten my allotment of carbs this morning for breakfast. I guess I'll just eat grilled chicken for the rest of the day.

It is also my birthday, I'm a 1/4 century old... Unfortunately, my friends want to take me out for drinks, buffalo wings, and cheese fries... You know you're committed to something when I had to turn that down. I told them we'd celebrate my p90x graduation in February instead.

Speaking of temptations, does anyone here watch Biggest Loser? If so, am I the only one that was glad to see Shay gone? My girlfriend thinks I'm heartless, but she really annoyed me. It was also funny that they didn't show a "transformation moment" for her at the end... wonder what that means?

Happy Birthday man!

I took "before" pictures 3 weeks ago when I began Power 90 (used it as a warm-up), as well as pictures from this past Sunday, but will upload them only in a few days. I plan on taking 30,60, and 90 day "after" photos.

JBot - Bring it!

I'm starting a head count since we have so many people. I will post the names of everyone who has joined this afternoon. Let's see if we can't all finish together!

Heading to a local BBQ joint for a birthday lunch with my girlfriend. I've already checked the menu online, and I will be having a greek salad with grilled chicken. I have no idea where this will power is coming from, but I like it! This thread rocks, and it's only Day 3. I'm pretty sure you guys are going to be the key to my ultimate success. Hope you all experience the same.

Bringin' it,
D

There is no way in HELL I'm posting my pictures right now!! They are soooo scary that I wanted to hide under the covers. I hope to see big improvements as we hit 30, 60, & 90 days. Depending on how much improvement I see maybe I'll be brave to post my pics. I do like seeing everyones before and after pictures but my are too embarrassing for me to post.

To all the new members who've joined our group, WELCOME!! I'm so glad our group is growing daily. I completed the shoulders/arms and Ab DVD's. My abs were pretty sore which made doing the ABX harder than Monday. Shoulders and arms went well. I was worried about my weights w/ the shoulder exercises. Only one where I think I need to have lighter weights - the exercise where your arms are straight & you raise them up front and then to the side. Raising to the front was fine, it was the sides that killed me. I think I need to get more weights for the bicep exercises. I used 10 lbs but it was pretty easy. Don't know if I should purchase 12 or just go ahead and get 15 lb. dumbbells.

I'm a bit worried with the Shoulders & Arms workout today. I feel clicking in my right rotator cuff, afraid that doing the shoulder workouts may injure it even more. I don't feel much pain there, though that clicking sound is frustrating.

Guys - what weight are you using for these exercises? Are you slowly increasing or decreasing the weight as the program progresses?

Re:Starting November 9th . . . who wants to join?! 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Did Yoga X today. At fist I thought "Oh nice, an easy day!" lol well I've never done a full hour of twisty pretzel-type yoga before. It was tough to do most of the poses. I was unfamiliar with a lot of them and had to pause a lot to get the technique correct. I took me 2 hours to get through it!

I had the most amazing experience afterwards. I crawled into bed and sleep like a happy baby for a few hours in the middle of the day. I NEVER nap! It was wonderful. And I didn't have hardly any back pain (I have some pretty bad disc disease). My muscles are sore but my spine is pretty happy. Once again, I had to modify a lot of the exercises, but I tried them all except for the one where you stand on your head and look like you've been decapitated.

I grabbed my dog's carpeted stairs she uses to get up and down off the bed - those have helped me in every CD so far since I don't yet have the strength and/or range of motion to do every exercise.

Wow, that was something. I feel so mellow!
