Starting November 9th . . . who wants to join?!?! 3 Weeks ago

Allright, I saw the post about the Nov. 2nd start and I wish I could do it, but I won't have my chin-up bar until Wens so I'm going to get into a small workout routine (lifting weights, push-ups, crunches, etc..) to get me ready for the P90X. I'm already in somewhat good shape, (130 lbs, 5' 9", and 25 yrs old male.) so i figure the 9th is a good start for me.
I should mention though, that I'm not looking to lose weight, so I'm not going to be on the same plan as everyone else. I'll be doing this to gain weight/muscle. I'll be substituting the bands for free weights in everything possible, and I am going to be doing tons of protein shakes along the way.
So, if you want a partner in body building crime . . you let me know! I plan on keeping up-to-date at least every 3 days with where I'm at and how I'm feeling. I'll be taking pictures (for myself) and will track my progress. I did get up to 165lbs last time I worked out heavily, so I'm hoping to get back to that weight. Who wants to join me!

Hi GLoBaLReBeL,
If you aren't picky about having a female as one of your partner's than I would love to have someone to keep me motivated. Haven't gotten my kit yet but Nov. 9th is my target start date. I've got just about everything I need equipment wise other than the pull up bar. Which one did you order?
I'm looking to tone up and lose approx. 10-15 lbs. I was in excellent shape 12 yrs. ago but it's been 12 yrs. ago. I'm really excited about the program & can't wait to get started.

I'm not sexist! I'm all for it! The more the merrier. I purchased the P90X chin-up bar but bought it from Ebay, and it came with the bands too for like $66 or something. I got the package only because I MIGHT use the bands at first until I feel its time to step it up to the weights.
Well, now's the time to start! I'm looking of course to gain 30 lbs in I'm hoping 9 months. I figure around 3 lbs a month should be do-able.
Hope you get your package soon!

I went to Dick's and purchased the Iron Gym Xtreme pull up bar. Looks exactly like P90x's bar. I'm impatient and didn't want to have to wait on another product. I'm pretty nervous about using this. At the gym I've always used the machine to do pull ups where you can adjust the % of body weight your lifting. This should be interesting. I wonder what tips the DVD's will give to users who can't pull up their own body weight at the beginning?

chances are they will have you put a chair or box under you. If you have read the manual so far, you'll remember that it has a Minimum Requirement regarding how many chin-ups you'll need to be able to do.
You should take this test ASAP, as well as slowly get into the mix of doing a few chin-ups, push ups, curls, etc. before you jump into the P90X. I threw on one of the upper body workouts this weekend and just about died! haha But I'm feeling better now, and have an idea of what is ahead for the next month or so.
I am looking forward to this! How about you . . U ready!!

Very surprised - I received my box today!! WooHoo! I did watch the intro DVD and plan on taking the fit test today. I think that's a great idea to do some of the workouts prior to starting next week. I like the idea of getting as much soreness out of my body as possible. Though I know next week will be brutal....ha!ha!
Surprised more people haven't joined the group. I'm sure it will grow as the weeks go on. Do you have an in person workout buddy? I'm trying to persuade a neighbor do it w/ me so I'll be more motivated and accountable to do it every day. She's still thinking about it.

Honestly . . . no.
My buddy got me on it, and he just finished his. So, no-one wants to do it with me. And to be honest, I kinda want this to be a self-reliant thing. I need the strength to push myself and that way I can only blame myself if I get lazy. I have notes up allover my house to remind me to do it! I just need to push myself to want it more

Did the fit test today. Passed everything except for the pull up test which is what I expected. I wondered if you could record a 1/16" or 1/32" of a pull up???? Ha!ha! The pull ups are going to be a HUGE challenge for me.
What DVD's are you doing this week to prepare for next week? I was thinking of just doing #1 & #5.
This should be FUN!!

Hey guys,
I might be able to join in the fun with you. I was hoping to start on November 16, but I might be able to start a week early.
I've slowly been assembling all the stuff I need, but I think I just about have it all. I'm going to be using resistance bands as well, as dumbbells can be quite expensive and I don't know which weights I need. But I may switch to them in the future.
I also don't have a great place in my house to workout, but I'm hoping to convert a little area in the garage. It's gonna be challenging, but hopefully I can pull it off.
Are you also going to be following the nutrition plan fairly closely?

Welcome Stojakapimp!!
I had a set of 10 lbs weight already & went to Dicks over the weekend to get another set. I ended buying 8 lbs weights. I wanted 5 lbs but they were sold out. It isn't easy trying to figure out what dumbbells we'll need during the 90 days.
I haven't read the nutrition part just yet. I pretty much know what it's going to say....no soft drinks, alcohol, candy, snacks in boxes, etc.... I plan on following it but my weakness is a good glass of Cab & sweets. All the Halloween candy is killing me and I haven't been the best since Saturday. So that will be a big challenge for me too. I've read on some posts about the number of calories the plan requires you to eat. I'm thinking around 1800 calories a day should suffice. I guess I should read the book before I say how many calories I plan on eating.

I myself am not going to be following the Nut. plan. My goal is to gain mass and weight but no fat! I will be intaking around 2.5K calories a day by protein shakes alone. I will then be eating my normal food to be at around 3.5 to 4K calories a day. I have a pretty fast metabolism already so I have to intake quite a bit of calories to really bulk up.
I myself already have dumbells with multiple different weights and shouldn't have any problems as long as I don't go above 30 lbs. The first week will be that of a trial week to see how I fair. If I'm not dieing by sunday, then I'll go buy a few extra pounds to jump to mid week 2, and then gradually keep adding to that.
Welcome to our 9 club!!!

Any of you guys going to use a heart rate monitor? I don't have one but wondered if this would be a good tool to have.

Just so you know, a buddy of mine got me to do this last year with him. It was a last minute thing so I really did not have the mind set to follow both the fitness and nutrition part to a tee. I did complete the fitness part but I did not bother at all with the nutrition plan. I actually gained a few pounds of muscle the first month and by the end of it lost about 10lbs of fat. Again, I did not follow the program to a tee so I eliminated yoga-x and eventually kenpo-x...I replaced them with a 4-5 mile jog. I was just doing what was working for me at the time. I was very happy with the results.
Since I stopped (don't ask me why??), I have gained fat back and lost muscle mass. This time around, I am following both the fitness program and nutrition plan to tee. I am about 5'11" and I think I am about 220-225 lbs...I am in alright shape, definitely have fat to lose though.
I did buy a wrist heart-rate monitor at walmart for under $30 and I recommend you to get one. The one I have also shows the calories you burn and it's a great feeling when you see the # of calories burnt after a workout. The main purpose of it is obviously to monitor your heart-rate. This is important because once you get the hang of these workouts, they do become easier and it's up to you to push yourself harder. Your heart-rate will not lie and determine if you are working hard enough.

Thanks for the good advice, fightFATblogger. I like the idea of knowing how many calories I'm burning. Guess I need to go shopping for one today.

ALSO - I highly recommend some sort of recovery drink. Last year, I just bought some whey protein that had glutamine (helps with muscle soreness) in it. This time around, I bought the P90X recovery drink.
Just in case you didn't know, in a nutshell...
Your muscles are starving after an extreme workout (p90x) so the best time to feed them is right after a workout (although, some new studies show that this is debatable...personally not buying into it yet). If you feed them a recovery drink of some sort, it will help maximize the process of building lean muscle as well as help your body recover for the next workout. You WILL BE sore after each workout so you can help your body rebound for next workout with a recovery drink.
GLoBaLReBeL – On top of having the recovery drink right after your workout, you 100% should have a whey protein shake right before you go to bed. The most productive muscle building period is when you are sleeping. If you feed your muscles whey protein right before they start building themselves, you will see better results. Personally, I am not taking a shake before bed as I do not want the extra calories to go with it….my goal is to lose fat so you can see my muscles.

hmm . . that does make sense.
My room mate is a trainer and he has explained to me that there really is no need for a specific "recovery drink" but more over just a good protein shake will work. He gave me some technical jargon as to why it didn't TRULY matter that it was a recovery drink, because your body digests the food/shake in the same way trying to replenish your muscles.
I will ask him about the nightime shake, but I think you're right on that part for me. I just hope my shake doesn't have a lot of sugar in it, because that might keep me up . .

If he is a trainer, he will agree with the shake before bed time. If not, take it behind his back...it's a well known fact. I don't think whey protein shakes have any sugar so you should be good to go.
I bought whey protein that had creatine, glutamine, and other important amino acids....i used it as my recovery drink but it's called "whey protein".
The p90x recovery drink has "recovery" in it's name, it's just another way to market it. I bought it because it has the right balance of carbs to protein which is even better for you. I agree though, there is other alternatives out there, your roomate can help you there.

I would highly recommend a heart rate monitor. I've been using one for a while now whenever I go jogging and I love having it. It's a great way to know what "zone" you're in, which is dependent on your current heart rate in relation to your maximum heart rate. Before I had one, I would push myself way too hard and I hated jogging. Now I monitor my heart rate and keep myself in a good fat burning zone, which means I'm jogging much slower and making it much more enjoyable. That said, it will also tell you if you're not working hard enough and need to step it up. But yeah, you'll want to pay attention to your heart rate in relation to your maximum heart rate.
As for a recovery drink, I just bought some chocolate milk the other day and plan on using that. I've read that it's similar to the P90X recovery drink, as it has almost exactly the same number of calories, carbs, and proteins (has that 4:1 carb/protein ratio). I think I'll give it a try and see how it does. Plus it's good to know you can look forward to some chocolate milk after a hard workout.
As for the protein shake before bed, is it good to take it right before bed, or is it treated like a meal where you shouldn't have one within 3 hours of going to bed? Everybody knows it's not good to eat late, but does that hold true for drinks and shakes?

I hate to make you spend more money but you should really have more than chocolate milk for your recovery drink. Chocolate milk does not contain whey protein (it’s just regular protein I think), glutamine (helps with muscle recovery), or creatine (enhances strength)…and other essential amino acids needed.
The p90x workout is tough, if you are not in decent shape…it’s very tough (still possible though). I think if you need anything (nutrition wise) during the program, it’s some sort of recovery drink. The recovery drink could be $25 whey protein with glutamine from walmart/GNC or the p90x recovery drink…and there are hundreds of other drinks are the market now. Chocolate milk is better than nothing though but you are about to beat the crap out of your body so do it a favor and give it some sort of recovery drink when it needs it the most.
The same somewhat holds true for shakes and drinks. It all depends how many and what kind of calories are in the drink. I don't think eating a can of dry tuna is bad for you right before bed and that's food. With that said, at my current state...I am not having a whey protein shake right before bed as it contains calories and my goal is to lose fat. If this all goes as expected...aka if i get ripped...i will start having a shake before bed to help gain muscle mass.
