Hi there. I just ordered my p90X yesterday and it shows it has shipped. I'd love to start with you guys on the 9th. I'm just hoping it gets here in time and that I have the time to review the materials and get everything I need. One thing I wanted to ask is do you need a pull up bar for indoors? I have one outside, but not sure if I need to be able to watch the DVD at the same time. I'm looking forward to starting and still contemplating doing the classic vs. lean version of the program. I love a more muscular look, but don't want to discourage myself if I'm not losing weight. I've been doing some boot camp style workouts and slim in 6 dvds, plus I ride my road bike and mountain bike several times a week. I've recently lost 18 pounds and would love to lose another 20. I am 5'2" and started at 163 pounds and am at 145. Personally, I am fine with looking much better than being super focused on the weight. Anyways, hope you two don't mind if I crash your work out party

Irene

I hate to make you spend more money but you should really have more than chocolate milk for your recovery drink. Chocolate milk does not contain whey protein (it’s just regular protein I think), glutamine (helps with muscle recovery), or creatine (enhances strength)…and other essential amino acids needed.

The p90x workout is tough, if you are not in decent shape…it’s very tough (still possible though). I think if you need anything (nutrition wise) during the program, it’s some sort of recovery drink. The recovery drink could be $25 whey protein with glutamine from walmart/GNC or the p90x recovery drink…and there are hundreds of other drinks are the market now. Chocolate milk is better than nothing though but you are about to beat the crap out of your body so do it a favor and give it some sort of recovery drink when it needs it the most.

The same somewhat holds true for shakes and drinks. It all depends how many and what kind of calories are in the drink. I don't think eating a can of dry tuna is bad for you right before bed and that's food. With that said, at my current state...I am not having a whey protein shake right before bed as it contains calories and my goal is to lose fat. If this all goes as expected...aka if i get ripped...i will start having a shake before bed to help gain muscle mass.

Chocolate milk does contain some whey protein, so it can be a good source of protein that will be quickly absorbed. It doesn't contain glutamine, but from what I've read, that's not a big deal. And lastly, no creatine, but I could care less about creatine, as I'd be looking to tone up and not bloat up. I still do plan on taking protein shakes throughout the day to meet the protein requirements, but I'd probably stick with the chocolate milk or other recovery drink that has the optimal carb to protein ratio (4:1).

Chocolate milk is a good recovery drink. Used it through out college (football) and it has what you need in it. If you want a little more, mix in a little whey protein in it. Maybe half a scoop. But it should be 2% or 1% or anything lower. NOOOOO whole milk, you are actually not suppose to drink whole milk after the age of like 3.

I also played college football and when I do drink my whey protein shakes I do mix them with 1% milk.

I just know there are better post-workout drinks out there than chocolate milk. Do whatever works for you though, I did not mean to knock it.

You may want to do more research on the importance of glutamine and creatine. Creatine aids in building lean muscle and glutamine helps you recovery. You will see why I take glutamine the morning after your first workout and right before you have to do another.

Are any of these supplements mandatory...absolutely not. I definitely have extra fat on my body now but I have been in great shape back in the day so I am very much looking forward to this program. I am only preaching what has worked for me in the past.

I am posting my pics November 15th on the website link where my signature is so I encourage anyone to leave me comments...negatives one are welcome too!

Welcome, Irene.

I read on another board, I think, the lean version is for someone (mostly women) who's already fit (i.e. doesn't need to lose weight) & wants definition. Now, I could be wrong. If someone knows better please correct me. I'm doing the classic version.

Guys,

Thanks for your insight regarding the recovery drinks. Something else I'm putting on my shopping list. Are the P90X products available at GNC or only online?

P90X products are only sold online, they are not sold locally.

If you didn't want to buy it online, you could buy something similar at walmart or gnc.

I have decided I'll prob just stick with my GNC bought Protein shakes. I'll be doing 3 a day and each will be about 450 calories, 25g of protein, and all the vitamins and creatine, etc. I will also be eating normally each day, which should net me around 3 - 4K in calories a day. I have an extremely fast metabolism and with that intake as well as the workout . . . I'm hoping my goal of 3 lbs a month will be attainable.

I'm stoked we got a new member of our Nov 9th group! Now . . . lets see who's going to have the strength to keep going on Thanks-giving and the day after!!! Who's got the drive huh!

Hey just saw your post, if it isn't too late like to join you guys in starting on the 9th. I haven't read all the replies yet but this seemed like more of a group I can relate to. I use to be in football shape, at 5'11 I was at one point weighing 240 pounds (Was setup to be a tight end in college) but injuries slowed me down and I just got into lifting. So Im use to the whole protein per pound aspect and what not, now recently though Im down to 205 and I believe I should be around the 17-20 % body fat range.

Im looking to add some size back on and trim the fat with this routine. Got the equipment ready (I have dumb bells from 10, 25, and 40 pounds), the pullup bar, and mats. Im still looking into the heart rate monitor though I believe that'll be down the line.

Just wondering, supplement wise I have whey protein (One with and one without carbs), Amino Acids, and a multi vitamin. Wondering if you guys suggest anything else seeing this is my first go around with the program. Not sure if you suggest any specific amount of protein intake as well. Aside from that Im excited!! P 90 X!!!!

X!

Welcome Dave! U made it just in time. If I were you, I would throw on the BRINT IT ON video and then do a few of the other videos while you still have time. I'm not going to lie, I just did the chest and back video and was pretty much on the floor at the 45 minute mark. I had to stop it cause I would have harmed myself had I gone any further.

If you do do a few of the videos, I recommend NOT pushing yourself. I tried to push it to the max, and never finished and was having a really hard time the 2nd round doing anything at all. I recommend that whatever the people on the video say, do 1/3, if not less then them! Sometimes they are doing 30, you do 10!! I was having a hard time even doing that, but I haven't worked out in a long time.

I'm following the same thing you just said, regrading teh shakes. I'm intaking (through the shakes) around 100g of protein, and then another 50 - 75g's of protein through regular food intake. I'm 131lbs right now, and my goal is to hit 165 - 175 within a year. I'm not big boned, and I'm not tall (5' 9" but after just one day . . . I'm sure I can do it!

Glad to have you with us! Be sure to take pics and follow the guides. If you're trying to lose weight READ THE NUTRITION GUIDE!! No JOKE! I'm trying to gain it, so I'm just going off the EAT AS MUCH FOOD AS POSSIBLE, but be smart!! Chicken, good cuts of steak, fruits to help the stomach, etc.

Good to have you in our group, Dave. I'm excited that it's growing.

Are y'all going to post your pictures online? I'm going to take pictures but I think I'll wait until the 30 day mark to post online for the world to see.

Read the nutritional guide and figured out I need to be eating around 2200 calories a day. Way off base from the 1800 I said the other day. This weekend I plan on writing everything out on what I need to be doing next week food wise. The exercise part is the easy part. For me, it's the eating. I hate to cook and look for the easiest thing to eat, mostly snacks. It's going to be hard for me to give up the starches.

For the ones who are counting calories, do you have a good website to recommend? I've heard of sparkpeople.com but didn't know if there are any others.

Thanks, guys.

kara

Kara - I am also going to be counting calories so if you come across a good site, let me know...and i will do the same.

Welcome Dave!

I have a "guys" camping trip this weekend (definitely not counting calories this weekend!) so good luck to all of you starting on Monday!

Remember - The first week will be the hardiest so do not get discouraged...taking longer breaks throughout is not cheating, especially through the first 2-3 weeks.

Everyone, I feel like an idiot, but I'm not going to be able to start with you on the 9th. I don't think my body is ready yet. My muscles are still hurting from the first day of chest and back and I still haven't done anything else. I'm going to take the next week to do the other exercises (carefully) to get my whole body ready for the P90X program.

I don't want to start and then be in soo much pain that I can't continue onto the next day. So, I'm going to slowly get myself ready. I'm also going to pick-up the push-up bars, because of the amount of push-ups they have you do. My wrists have a VERY hard time with doing push-ups and everyone I know that bought the bars tells me it took almost ALL the strain off their wrists.

So, I apologize for bailing out on you this coming week. But rest assured, I'll be starting up next Monday!!! Hope you can all forgive me.

GlobalRebel, I think I'm in the same boat as you. I've just recently got all the equipment I need, but I still haven't even set up my chin up bar. I've heard it's good to try some of the exercises first before starting the actual program, so I think I better take some more time before diving in. Perhaps I'll be able to start around the same time as you, which would be the 16th

Re:Starting November 9th . . . who wants to join?! 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I'll tell you right now, that its a GREAT idea to at least try a few of the DVD's to get your body ready for the ultimate in workout!! I run, and bike, but don't do anything WORKOUT related, and after 45 minutes of the chest and back DVD, I about collapsed onto the floor. It was GREAT!! But, mu arms and back are aching like crazy right now.

I'm going to do some Yoga X tomorrow and some AB X tonight. I will then do each DVD a little bit next week, and begin my weight gainer shakes in full swing. That way, by the time I go balls to the wall on the 16th I should be at least in good enough shape and form to handle an entire workout and then be ready for the next day without to much strain.

Hi Everyone

Do you guys mind one more jumping on this train? I started early October but my work and life schedule exploded. I see nothing stopping me in the coming months to at least build a habit of working out and making it a priority. My biggest challenge is the scheduling of my meals. Im sure everyone has read it or heard it, diet makes you or breaks you. Im PUMPED and cant wait to feel that soreness of a great workout.

Peace,
Tony

Ok, I got my DVD set. Sadly, I did not get the set that includes the nutrition guide because I love to read all the info. So I am going to just keep doing the diet I already was using on the slim in 6 videos. If anyone knows a way I can get a copy, I would be happy to buy it. Also, for those of you looking for a good calorie tracker, I use the one at www.livestrong.com called The Daily Plate. I use the free version and it is great. I have an application loaded to my itouch so I can track wherever I go. You can also download all your eating calendars and weight loss charts. The itouch app is only .99 so not bad. I did review the first day's workout and I am a little intimidated. I've done all my measurements and just need to do the fitness test and pics. I've downloaded the daily calendar, but I don't know what I am supposed to be writing on those, is it just to check off? I do have the other sheets where I am supposed to write the # of reps. Anyways, looking forward to getting started. I may need to start tomorrow as I am going away Fri-Sunday, so I want to try and plan my rest day for Saturday, and squeeze the workouts in early on Fri. a.m. and late Sunday p.m. when I get back. Tough way to start, but I am looking forward to it. Also, anyone know how to add a profile pic? It's probably staring me in the face, but I just ain't seeing it

Cheers,
Irene

Ok, got my fitness test in and my before photos. Talk about staring reality in the face! I guess the best part of looking so bad, is that my after pics should hopefully see a big improvement I'm proud of all of us starting now, especially with the holidays coming up. I think it's a great challenge that will keep us healthy through those tough times. I know if I'm working hard, I'm way less likely to pig out and cancel out the hard work. I'm planning my day one for tomorrow, so I'll post and let you all know how it went. Let's get busy!!!!
