Some questions before starting the program 6 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
Hi all,

I ordered the p90x program for my wife and I today and had some questions. While I'm at it, I'll introduce some brief background. When beginning our freshman years of college, I was 5'10 and weighed 180. I was in the best shape of my life. My wife was a track'ster and was super fit. Five years later, we are both VERY out of shape, rarely working out or eating healthy. I have literally no muscle mass but somehow weight 15 pounds less, yet have a gut that wasn't there a few years back. We are ending this trend and getting fit again, and hope the program will help us to achieve our goals. Now, here's my question. We are getting the "accessories" needed for the program and have come to the dumbbells. My wife will probably use some bands, but I prefer the weights. I have a set, the style which you add the plates and screw on the flange (or whatever it's called that keeps the plates on the bar). I will need to spend a few bucks to add some weight to them, they only go to 20 lbs with what I have now. With the speed of the program, would it be more beneficial to simply purchase a few varieties of other dumbbells, like hex or perhaps even an adjustable model? Any feedback and experiences would be appreciated. Thanks,

I'm in a similar boat, except my adjustable dumbell set has spring clip thingy's to keep the weights on. I've got enough plates to go up to 25 lbs on each dumbell, then I have a set of 30 lb hex dumbells. I'm a little worried that the springs will slip if I'm waving them around alot or at verticle angles, but I'm not sure if I want to buy more sets of solid dumbells.

For my fiance though we're definitely going to go with preset dumbells -- assuming I can find colors she likes

Alright, here's what we decided to go with. We sucked it up and bought the Bowflex 552's with a stand. Dick's Sporting Goods has them on sale for 399 and the stand is included, a pretty fair deal. Hard to dish out that money on top of the program, mat, and pull-up bar but my wife and I decided this was a sound investment in ourselves and our health. So, hopefully I won't REGRET purchasing the dumbbells. Also, thanks for the reply Val. Anyone else use these? Best,

The bowflex dumbells are very very nice to have, however you could have gotten along just fine with the old style of dumbells you currently have. That's what I plan on using, but I also have other weights from a bench press unit that I can add on so I guess my situation is a little different. All in all, if you plan on truly using the bowflex dumbells then I say good investment. They're very handy.
