Good question, Davy. It can be a bit confusing. I'll try to clear it up...
P90 is the oldest of the series. It was the original and it's a great package. P90X is the "extreme" version of the series. It was originally marketed a couple of years after P90 for those who wanted to go "to the extreme" in their workouts. Beachbody took P90X to the infomercial zone on TV and that's where many of us first learned about it. P90X isn't a "starter" workout series where you can just begin if you haven't worked out in awhile. It's designed for those who are physically fit but want to take it up a notch or two. Beachbody recommends several other programs for those who want to start working out, and then they can "graduate" to P90X later.
P90X comes with 12 DVDs and a comprehensive meal/diet plan. Tony Horton, the P90 series creator, further divides the workout series into a "classic" version, a "lean" version (if your goal is to slim down), and a "Doubles" version that adds more cardio. You're free to choose which version you want to work through, and since the series lasts for 90 days you can always use a different version in your next 90 day cycle if you'd like. You don't have to buy anything extra for a given version, but you will need essentials for whatever version you use, such as dumbbells or bands, a pull-up bar, etc. Beachbody sells everything you need, or you're free to select your own.
By the way...those pictures Beachbody shows of the before and after results are REAL people! No models or trick photography here, it's the real deal! Many people here in the forum have the same type of before and after shots, so it is possible for you, too!
P90X now has its own "super-extreme" version known as P90X Plus. I would get through P90X first before tackling this package as it's really extreme!! Also, P90X Plus works along with the P90X videos, so you'll need P90X as well.
Hope this helps...
