a few questions before I begin 1 Year ago Karma: 0
Hey everyone!
I've been reading online and doing some research and would like some feed back and opinions on some of my questions.

I am totally out of shape right now. I'm 5ft 8in and about 260lbs. I have a lot of fat in the stomach area and breast area, does this program help burn these areas? All in all I would love to at some point lose about 60 to 70 lbs. I dont usually have a problem with cardio and want to focus on this.

My couple questions are this...

What types of resistance bands should you get for this program, are there places online? Any ideas?

Is it OK to focus more on burning fat with this program than on gaining muscle at the beginning?

I know that if and when I start this program, it is going to kick my butt. I'm sure I will not be able to do most of the excercises on it for weeks. But I do intend to give it my all.

Pauly,
I started the program weighing 255, at 5’10” so to answer your first question, yes you could do this program, even though it is geared more towards people that are already in decent shape. You can read through some of “bighurts” posts on this forum, I believe he started off around 265 and has had great results. It really just comes down to your body type and ability. I have a long history in athletics and weight lifting, so that helped me quite a bit. You will have to assess your own situation to determine if you can handle the vigorous routines in the program.

As for bands, you can get them online or at any sports retail store. I personally use dumbbells so I can’t provide any direct feedback on bands, but from what I’ve read about them I believe they could be a perfect fit for you.

There are 3 different versions of the program, “Lean,” “Classic,” and “Doubles.” You indicated in your post that you are wanting to focus on burning fat so the “lean” program is what you will want to do, and it will work wonders for you. There is also a great nutrition guide that comes with the program that will also be a great resource for you. The first phase of the diet plan is a “fat burning” plan, and will help you melt off the fat when used correctly and along with the P90X workouts.

Keep reading around this “beginners section” of the forum and you’ll find all kinds of useful information. Also check in on the “P90X Before and After Pics” section for a little extra motivation. A lot of people have seen amazing results using this program, and you can too!!!

Pauly,

I was over 300 pounds when I started. Coming on down, but slowly, after 1 trip through P90X and two trips through P90X Plus.

Also, check out Big Papa's posts (he hasn't posted in awhile). Another big guy who got what he needed with the program.

Hey Pauly...
I did start out at 265 with my waist at 46 inches (measured at my belly button). Tomorrow is day 45 for me and I'm down almost 20 lbs and 6 inches gone off of my midsection already. I'm completely blown away with the results that I'm getting, but I do know that the nutritional aspect is the most important part of my success. I've always been in the gym, but since I wasn't eating right, I wasn't making the progress that I wanted. I started P90X because I knew I needed a regimented eating plan and the results are speaking for themselves!! I do my best to bring it on each and every workout and stay as strict as possible on the eating. If you do that, I'm sure you will certainly start getting your body to the place you want it to be!!!

My goal is to get down to 8-9% bodyfat from a 26-28% starting point. I may not acheive that on this first cycle, but I plan on making this a way of life, so I will continue doing cycles of this and P90X+ when I'm up to it.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

You will lose fat but it's not like you're targeting specific places for fat loss. You do target specific muscles but for fat loss it's different. There is no such thing as spot reducing. E.g. The idea of doing situps to get rid of love handles. Doesn't work that way.

Below 10% body fat could become a health problem. More healthy goal for body fat % is 11. A certain amount of fat is needed for bodily functions. Fat regulates body temperature, cushions and insulates organs and tissues and is the main form of energy storage. Unless you plan on becoming an olympic swimmer, I would not recommend going below 11%.
