100+ lbs are you out there 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Just wondering if there is anyone doing P90x with more than 100lbs to lose. I know its not recommended for us but I'm going for it. I did the first workout yesterday and did most of the pushups on my knees but I did them all until I was face down on the carpet.

Yes I know I'm crazy lol

Kudos to you, man!! I'm no expert and maybe others will chime in but might I recommend you go with the "lean" program. It offers more cardio workouts and fewer weight training exercises. You can always run though the entire program again in the "classic" manner once you get where you like with your weight. I wish you the best of luck. I don't have anywhere near that amount of weight to lose so I certainly envy your ambition. Keep it up!!!

The common misconception is that "lean is better for losing weight because of cardio."

Don't worry, it wasn't a target at you vshortt because I have seen it so many times on here before you became a member.

There are several reasons to do Lean, but in my opinion, the only one that is relavent is: If you can't handle Classic, Lean is an option.

The reasononing is this...

Classic mixes cardio with muscle training. While cardio burns more fat than muscle work does, a body that has more muscle in it will burn more fat than one with less muscle in it. That statement can be sort of confusing. The point is, you need to do both for fast fat burning. Think of your muscles as a multiplier in the fat burning equation. The more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn for doing the same action. Muscles take more calories to "operate" than fat does.

So Joe-bob sits on the couch and weights 215 lbs with a Bodyfat of 40%. If he sad there the entire day, he may burn something like 1000 calories just by being alive. Breathing, eating, goin to the bathroom.

Jim-bob sits on the couch and weighs 215 lbs with a bodyfat of 6%. If he sat there the entire day, he might burn something like 1500 calories just by being alive.

Get the idea?

So while Lean may be easier on you, if you can handle classic, there is no reason you shouldn't do it. If you don't want to bulk up with bigger muscles? Do more reps with lighter weights.

Only problem I could see you run into would be plyo. Being that heavy could pose as a problem for jumping around. Your knees might not like it too much. Until you lose some of the weight and are more nimble, you may have to substitue in Cardio X. Thats the only change I would make to the Classic program.

I cannot offer advice based off scientific reading and such for you.. What I can tell you is that I'm 21 years old working to get into the air force. I'm 6' 3"and about 300lbs. I need to be 220 before recruiter will eve talk to me but want to be 200 at least. I started p90x at about 310 and that first round was hard I won't lie, however I am stronger, more flexible, more energetic, and feel far better about myself. The key is to listen to toni and don't push yourself, doing it to that burn but never to injury.. Don't feel bad about doing assisted pullups or pushups on your knees jus make it doable and effective for you. You will be amazed the results yo feel even if you don't see it immediately. Good luck to you!

As an added thought to the poster above on the plyo comment, they are right. I was out for a week due to lower back injury from plyo.. It is very high impact so modify modify modify! On this second round I can do most of it without feeling any bad pains but I still modify or will stop an exercise if I think I'm risking injury.. CardioX is a very good alternative

Well plyo was last night and it was tough. I did 20-25 seconds of each, didn't get my legs up nearly as high as they did, but heart rate was up the entire time and I was beat at the end. So far so good

Something is better than nothing. Plyo, like Ab Ripper, is generally one of the workouts most people have to work their way into it. If you are able to do 100% of Plyo at the intensity the people on the DVD are doing in the first 2 weeks? You probably don't even need to do P90X.

If you want something to strive for? Try to match Dominic. The guy is a beast.

I have done plyo 6 times now (I am on week 8 recovery now), and I can almost complete everything 100% with their intensity. I still have to modify the Mary Katherine (jumping lunges), and I do the jumprope during hot feet. Otherwise I can do it all now. Day 1? I was modifying even more than Pam is. So just keep going. Pam is an excellent person to watch on those videos early on.

I just wanted to chime in on here. I just noticed the thread and was happy to see a topic like this! I started this past Monday and am currently 6'2" and weigh 335. I wish P90x had some better guidance for bigger folks trying to do the program...like maybe having 1 goofy out of shape person in the workout vids along with 3-4 experts like they have. I have been trying to modify certain aspects of the program so far (knee pushups, crunches over some ab ripper stuff) and I'm really not feeling too bad about it. I was basically 100% sedentary for the last few years aside from occasional elliptical runs, so I figure any amount of activity is better than not doing it at all.

Keep it up MidwestDad! My plan is to get through these 90 days and then see how I feel about the program. If I see some decent results, maybe I will shoot for another round and so on.
