I am just finishing P90X for the second time and wanted to pass along some comments:

1. Do the exercises in order.
2. Keep adding weight to each exercise when compared to the prior time you did the same routine and don't do more than 10 reps. Also, no big deal to drop the the rep count with the heavier weights; just rebuild to 10 reps.
3. Nutrition matters, especially, protein, fiber, and water.
4. Write everything down...this really matters a lot.
5. Consider swapping out the cardio days for HOC or high octane cardio exercises; I did the cardio routines religiously the first time through, but went with HOC (I jumped rope and swung a 70 pound kettlebell for around 30 minutes on each cardio day).
6. Do the pull ups and push ups with good form; they account for 27% of the exercises and you can really mess up your shoulders and elbows if you go hard and do them wrong.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the tips. I agree for the most part. As far as the cardio goes, I do think as time goes on and you get in better shape, you need more challenging cardio exercises, but HOC is not the only thing you can do. Doing things like interval training is a great alternative for the basic cardio days as well. You can also do things like do plyo, but add more reps to each exercise. Do them longer than the 30 seconds they give you & take less breaks between exercises.

Good for you finishing P90X twice though! I'm sure you've come a long way.

You make some great points. I see too many people who only do their favorites workouts instead of all of them in the directed order. Hey doing your favorite workout is still great and better than doing nothing at all, but it's obviously best to follow the order the experts recommend.

As for substitutes for cardio, high intensity interval training is a great substitute. I rarely do Kenpo X anymore. It is a great workout to help develop balance, but I don't seem to get as good of a workout as with other cardio routines.

One good thing I have to say about Kenpo is that, unlike the other cardio videos, it really works my shoulders and arms. They're pretty tired afterwards and sore the next day.

Try adding wrist weights to Kenpo and really concentrate on controlled punches and body movement / balance. Also, up your reps beyond what the video is showing to really wear your arms out. Keep your horse-stance deep to wear out the legs. There's plenty workout there if you modify and concentrate -- if you do the default walk-through tho, or simply whiff your arms about, I agree it holds little value.
