Can I workout empty stomach? And should I take a enery drink such as red bull before of after my workout?

Re:Energy Drinks? 2 years, 7 months ago #25349

Whether you eat before or not is all up to your body. Some people can work out after eating, others prefer an empty stomach.

Regarding energy drinks I would stay away. I am sure they are not in the P90x Nutrition guide. Not only are they unhealthy but your body can become dependent/ addicted to caffeine.

I would stay away from the energy drinks. They have lots of carbs, sugars and empty calories. And of course there is the "crash" that comes after the energy "buzz" wears off.

There is also the problem of dehydration and other potential side effects. Energy drinks are dangerous and to be quite frank I don't know how they are legal.

I had a red bull before i went for a jog once i nearly passed out my Heart was pumping so fast. I have never even thought about drinking one ever since.

I work out first thing in the morning. I eat a medium sized banana or some other fruit (one fruit portion from the Nutrition plan) & drink about 300ml (8 oz) of water half an hour before i work out just enough to get me thought. Drink what ever amount you can with out it sloshing around in side you when you start warming up

When i tried to with out the food & water i was weak & didn't even finish some of the workouts now i have energy to do the bonus round in plyo.

Drinks like Red Bull and Monster aren't real energy drinks, they just call them that. They're pop/soda with extra sugar, caffeine, and other junk. Like merobertd said, some kind of fruit before a workout works pretty good if you think you need the extra energy.

I'd stay away from energy drinks post-workout (or any other time of day). They're packed with sugar, caffeine, etc. It's like chugging a soda at the end of your workout. Instead, try a recovery drink like the one sold by P90X or even just a glass of chocolate milk (which, oddly enough, has the 4:1 carb-to-protein ratio that's ideal for recovery). I have a shake of protein powder, peanut butter, almond milk and banana, but have also tried the P90X recovery drink (which in my opinion is fine but on the expensive side...)
