Hey,
I was wondering if anyone took any kind of suppliments besides glutamine, creatine, or whey protein?? And what kind of results are people getting with the suppliments that they would not otherwise have?

after doing tons of research I started taking green tea pills every day. supposedly they help metabolize fat cells and help to increase your metabolism. that, however, is a very small reason why I take them. they also contain very powerful antioxidants which are believed to prevent cancer. the list goes on and on, but I would definitely recommend you look into green tea.
also, one of vitamin B's functions is to help turn your food into energy rather than it being stored as fat. so if you're cutting calories and need more energy for the workouts, it should help you out.
my advice: go to wal-mart or gnc and get a B complex and take it in the mornings.

I have Greens Plus at home but I haven't taken it for a while. I bought it for the vitamin B12. I'm not sure how many calories/carbs are in a serving of it though. It probably wouldn't hurt to take it because there aren't many veggies in this eating plan.
Thats cool about green tea fighting cancer, I didnt know it did that

I take all the normal things... Multi vitamin, Whey, Fish Oil, Creatine in addition to an intra-workout drink called Intrabolic. I'm on the first container of it now and can honestly feel a difference if I skip it during a workout.

oh and don't forget about a recovery drink. I drink v8 splash mixed berry after every workout along with a multi. there are tons of different good things for recovery drinks though. also a motrin will keep you from being in pain all day after your workout.

There are different supplements for literally EVERYTHING a person can do while working out or exercising. If you're trying to burn fat I highly recommend Hydroxycut Hardcore. Today was my first day of P90x so I can't tell you how the Hydroxycut has helped me because there's obviously no progress yet, but I have used the pills in the past with just running and no weight lifting and I went from roughly 199 to around 175-176 in a 3 month span with a correct diet. I used to weight train a lot so I'm pretty familiar with supplements and since I started my P90x I should be here more often so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I have done a week of a few of the videos to get the soreness out but today was my first "official" day 1. I am taking CLA, Whey protein, and one that I purchased a few months ago but have not tried until a few days ago. Its called MPower by Rivalus. I notice a difference in my workouts but took one at 4pm and it kept me up ALL NIGHT!! Anyhow, I really like it because it was made for athletes in Vancouver as an energy enhancer, it is also made out of all natural ingredients, no chemicals or alterations.

What exactly are you taking supplements for? Are you trying to build muscle? Whey Protein is designed to enhance muscle growth and bulk up in most cases.

Ok one thing wrong with this,
Whey Protein is whey protein. If it were modified it would be no longer whey protein. Of cource, if anyone has tried pure whey protein it is absolutely disgusting!
There are tons and tons of supplements out there. People will tell you to take this. Magazines will tell you to take that. Some people will tell you to eat lots of sugar, drink wheat grass, sing in the shower, or just all kinds of stuff. Right now I'm trying T-Bomb II, which is helping a lot but if you do not have the basics then you need to.
If you want to "bulk" up... Whey protein is the way to go. But realize what bulking up means. It does not mean you are going to get absolutely ripped from this. It just means its going to add mass to your body. Either in the forum of muscles or fat. Ever wonder why there are "fat" people who can bench alot but yet... "fat"? Its because bulking up adds weight not lose. Muscle is formed when you lift heavy objects and cause tears in the muscles. Then your cells replace the tears with protein creating a larger muscle strand. So lifting will only make you bigger.
If you are looking for lean muscle but still have alot of protein.
Muscle Milk is a great product just for that! It is anabolic, so it doubles as a recovery drink.
Creatine is a great product too. If you eat lots of shell fish then you should have some kind of idea how it works. It puts water into your muscles.
And vitamins are always a must. If you can get one in a liquid form, then that is better. But do not get suckered into the whole absorption thing. If centrum was so bad for you, why is it the most recommended vitamin by doctors or nutritionists? Plus its alot cheaper than some of the other garbage out there.
But yes, do not get suckers into paying a higher price for something that is the exact same thing is a cheaper version you can get at abertsons. A little homework can help you with it.

great post mr phil!!
I looked at muscle milk...has a lot of fat for me. I am trying to lose fat...
I remember a few years ago talking to someone from GNC
about supplements.
He told me the BEST way is to EAT. In other words eat your proteins, eat your minerals and vitamins.
Eat chicken, fish, veggies etc. That where you are going to get most of your nutrition. Then you can "supplement" that with whey protein etc.
That being said....I am using p90x recovery drink, EAS myoplex lite bars and EAS whey protein products........

Thats some good advice there. Supplements are exactly what they are. They are not stand alones. They just help you along the way.

Thanks for the advice guys! I certainly don't want to bulk up!! I want to get smaller and leaner but still have some definition. I want to stay feminine and toned but for me I find it really easy to build muscle even though i do high reps with lighter resistance. Maybe it is the Whey...but I am going to experiment and have yogurt or milk with fruit after.

Well no matter what, you are going to gain muscle. But do not be alarmed either. Muscle is a very heavy substance because of how tightly packed you can get it. So you might see a little weight gain but not in any mass.
As far as the whey protein goes, I would drink maybe half a shake after a workout. Thats presuming you eat the recommended diet. The only problems with dairy products is that it can slow down your metabolism slightly. And if you are going for a cut body you want as much as you can get.

As was mentioned briefly. You really don't need ANY supplements at all for any workout or any goal. You can get all your required daily macros and nutrients from actual food.
The one benefit of Whey Protein supplements is that it is a fast protein and thus is more quickly and efficiently absorbed by the muscles after a workout session within that "window of opportunity" so to speak.
Protein helps muscles rebuild and repair. It is not the protein supplement that will have you bulk up or get huge, it will simply help to repair your muscles faster and better. It is usually recommended to eat about 1g of protein per lb of body weight per day.
As for other supplements, they really aren't needed. Creatine is useful if you are looking to bulk up or get an extra energy boost. Weight loss supplements I would suggest to stay away from, but it's up to people on an individual basis. Weight gainers as well. You can really achieve all your goals by just eating properly and accordingly. Anyway, read up on these supplements. There are hundreds of articles out there about all of them. Bodybuilding.com has a great section of articles just for supplements.
Cheers!

True however, its not going to help you loose weight. You can only gain weight with a high protein diet. I am not saying it is bad, I actually suggest it. But you got to make sure if you do that how much you take is tuned to your workout.
The whole 1g per pound thing is kinda misleading. Just like a car, oil companies out there tell you to change your oil every 3,000 miles. This is not necessarily wrong, but it's not the only way to go. It depends how you drive, for how long, ect... Your owners manual will tell you how to determine it, and the oil company does not make the owners manual. And that goes for any supplement!
But our bodies do not come with an owners manual but there are plenty of resources out there! A very good place to start is something we have seen a lot in out lives. The food pyramid!
http://www.mypyramid.gov
This is a customizable food pyramid. A very good resource to have on the belt. There are others out there but I would try the pyramid out first.

You can lose weight while intaking the 1g per lb of body weight. Of course, the 1g per lb is maybe a little exagerated for some people, and I agree that it depends on the individual. Fat loss, or "cutting" diets, are typically considered to be a drop in carbs while slightly increasing fat and protein intake. The use of the higher protein or stable amount of protein is that it serves to repair your muscle and maintain them in a period of caloric deficit. While "cutting", you typically lose muscle mass and strength, cutting on protein will enable this to happen at a more rapid pace, while still intaking an adequate amount will slow the process by aiming at maintaining your muscle mass as best as possible.
Weight loss is simply achieved by eating at a caloric deficit, meaning, you burn more calories than you eat within a day. You can eat as much protein as you want, if you're burning more calories in a day than you eat, you'll lose weight.
If your sole goal is to lose weight regardless of muscle loss or what not, then by all means, just eat less. There is a whole section on the Bodybuilding.com forums dedicated to Nutrition and another for Fat Loss if anyone is interested in reading up on it or asking questions. There are also many articles about all kinds of supplements and a forum section dedicated to them as well.

This is true and I completely agree.
But all im saying is that too much protein and you turn it into fat. Just like too much of anything. Fat is stored energy from calories, protein, sugar, vitamins, ect...
