Hello everyone. I was glad to find this forum. I've just ordered the p90x program and I'm excited. I loathe to order anything from infomertials - most everything looks like hype and marketing. I'm looking for something real and with substance while at the same time being relatively simple.

Why I ordered this program:
- I just turned 41.
- I have gained a few pounds this last year due to inactivity
- I understand that working out and dieting is the key to being in shape, looking good and feeling good.. but hate the routines of working out at the gym with friends. I feel like that I'm get slower results because of lack of variation. I don't want to be in a social club.. I want to be in shape and look good.
- I need a way to interject change in my work out. I feel like a dork trying new things randomly at a gym.

Now, a little about me. I'm 5'10" and about 190 pounds. I have a desk jockey job. While I do not currently exercise regularly I am able to do things like run on an elliptical runner with a hill climb variation program for 45 minutes. I can rock climb in a gym and outdoors, but have not done so regularly for several years - I want to get back to this activity by spring of 2009. When I lock in on a goal, I commit 1000%. I was in the Army when I was young and that experience taught me how to reach down when I want to quit pushing myself.. but I need a plan, a goal and I need to feel like I'm working quickly towards the goal with my plan. A 90 day boot camp to get re-energized about a healthy lifestyle sits very good with me.

Now whew! All that being said - I dont want to wait for the burn of the first day. I want to limit the start up pain by doing some things while I wait for my new program to arrive. I'm headed out today to buy a pull up bar and dumbbell. In the mean time.. from you experienced p90'ers I'd like to hear what I need to do to limit my downtime and pain of the first week of my program. I'd like to hear your thoughts about my past and my reasons for doing this. I want to make sure that this program is what I'm looking for!

Thanks a ton in advance from a new guy!

Drew

Welcome to the forums!

You've come to the right place for advice and to share your experiences. No hype here...just a bunch of folks who are committed to helping each other achieve goals!

You're going out to get the right stuff. P90X is on its way. I'd keep doing the exercises you're doing...ellipticals are a great workout. Throw in a few push ups and sit ups and you'll be ready when P90X gets to your residence.

Bring it, man! We're here to cheer you on!!

Make sure you have some plan for your recovery drink, if you don't want to get the Beachbody powder. I just added a comment to another newbie's question with some suggestions for what to do in place of the recovery powder. I have had very little DOMS because I always have a recovery drink/snack.

I think you'll love the program, I do (I'm on Week 5).

Use lighter weights until you become fitter may help with the pain of the first week. You should expect to feel some discomfort though otherwise you're probably not pushing yourself enough. Your object is to lose weight so you can do more reps with lighter weights.

I agree with comments about the recovery drinks/snacks. I think that drinks should be used after exercise and snacks during the day but that's just me - you have to discover what's best for you. I have a protein drink and I wish I'd used them when I was younger after playing football, it would have saved me a lot of aching!!
