Tips for overcoming being Self Conscious at the Gym
Become Familiar with the Gym
Ask an employee to show you around and show you how to use the equipment. The big machinery can be very intimidating if you have never been around it. Your confidence will boost if you are able to walk into the gym and know exactly how to turn on a machine and use it. However, if you are unsure of how to use the machinery, this can quickly make you feel self conscious at a gym. All it takes is a few minutes of training, and you will walk into that gym feeling like a pro at running the equipment.
Start out Slow
Trying to overextend yourself on the first few times at the gym will cause you to pant because you are barely able to breathe and is a sure sign that you are new to the gym. This embarrassment will make you even more self conscious at a gym. Simply pace yourself and slow down to avoid the embarrassment of panting and gasping for air.
Wear Clothing that makes you Feel Good
This is one of the most common reasons why people feel self conscious at a gym. There is nothing set in stone that you are required to wear a tight workout suit or that you have to wear extra baggy clothes. Find a couple of outfits that truly make you feel good about yourself and you will feel less self conscious at a gym.
Stop comparing yourself to other Gym Members
This is also a very common reason why people are self conscious at a gym and it is a very hard obstacle to overcome. You have to be able to truly believe in your capabilities. This can be hard for people with low self-esteem; however, there are some simple steps that can help you overcome this obstacle.
The first thing you must do is to remember that everyone in that gym is human. Those people that appear to be extremely confident and are very good at using the exercise equipment are likely dealing with their own personal struggles.
The next step is to stop making up stories of what people are thinking of you. Who cares? You need to truly understand that what matters the most is your health. You must also remember what your reasons are for being at that gym.
Tell yourself that you deserve to be there just as much as the next person. Block those horrible thoughts from your mind. If they start to enter in, then remember that if you let those thoughts get the best of you, then you will fail at becoming the best you can be. Focus on your goals for living a healthier life, and you will overcome those feelings of being self conscious at a gym.
