Five Tips for Surviving the First Date

Introduction

First dates are very fun, but they can also make people a nervous wreck.  The goal of making a good impression and getting that second date can often be daunting, especially if we start to feel bad about the date before it even takes place.  Self doubt is one of the biggest mood killers for a first date and if you start incessantly questioning yourself and everything about you, the doubt can become a self-fulfilling prophecy as you probably won’t be much fun on that date.

You may ask why a dating advice article is on a diet/fitness site and that answer is quite simple.  The way you appear, your self-image even, can affect everything on your date from your own confidence to the first impression your date has of you.

To help you get past it and on with the rest of the relationship, here are five tips that you can employ to make you more successful and therefore to make you feel better too.

Tip #1 – Relax!

Once you realize that being nervous before a date begins is a natural part of the entire process, you’ll find it much easier to just kick back and relax enough to really be able to get through the date without doing anything too over the top.  It is easy to be nervous because before a first date you really wouldn’t have had another opportunity to get to know the other person better in most cases.  This therefore represents your first chance to get to know the person better and that is where the nerves come from.

One way that you can try to get past them is through simply visualizing that you’re out there with your friends instead of with someone you’re trying to get to know.  If you can make that work and take a few deep breaths before you sit down at the table, you could end up finding that the first date can actually go a lot better than you might have otherwise thought.

Another trick that can sometimes work is planning for the conversation beforehand.  It’s usually better to let things flow spontaneously, but if you are really having problems with nerves you might find that you don’t really have another choice.  Planning beforehand can give you something to say which in turn can make you feel less nervous when the date actually comes along.

Tip #2 – Be Sure of Yourself

This is also known as confidence.  The old ideas of mind over matter certainly apply here because just as nervousness is something that is created in your mind, confidence is also something that is really a matter of your mind.  If your mind is confident and you focus on being confident, you’ll find that your actions are confident as well.

Before your date starts, repeat over and over to yourself that the date will be a success.  Try to build up a confident state of mind in this way.  Then, during the actual date, whenever you feel yourself start to get nervous or feel that things may be about to unravel, mentally repeat the success of the date in your mind and you’ll find that your actions take a cue from your thoughts and you start feeling and acting more confident.  Your partner will sense your confidence and will certainly respect it, but you need to be confident and sure of yourself for that particular plan to work.

Tip #3 – Interest is Your Best Friend

We’re not talking about financial interest here.  Instead, what interest means is interest in your partner.  One of the reasons that you are going out is that you found something intriguing or interesting about the other person and that is what you’re trying to find out more of on the date that you’re about to commence.

So make sure that you keep the conversation flowing.  Ask them questions about their past and their present and try to avoid having any long and uncomfortable lulls in the conversation.  Eventually, so much banter will lead to a more natural flow to the conversation and that is when the date can really begin to take off.  If you find yourself nervous about this fact, put yourself in their shoes.  Once you realize that they’re probably just as nervous, the process can truly begin.

Tip #4 – Prepare Your Self-Image

The army says that it’ll help you be all that you can be and that’s really the attitude that you need to take towards dating as well.  Whatever your insecurities may be about yourself and your body, you should take steps to try and address them.

Most people feel self-conscious about the pounds that they have on their stomach and thighs, but if you exercise, diet and supplement with a product like Proactol you will be able to begin portion control by decreasing the cravings that you get for food.  It’s possible to lose up to two pounds a week on appetite suppressants like Proactol alone and for that reason it is definitely a good way for you to get into shape for the dating scene.  Add in a low-fat lowered caloried diet with even moderate exercise you can lose weight fast and transform your body.  So please spend plenty of time browsing the hundreds of articles we have on our website to learn more.

Tip #5 – Don’t Put on an Act

Even though the previous tips have been about getting you to prepare a bit and try to polish off your image, you need to be careful not to take this too far.  Even though you can prepare questions and try to get into shape, the core of the person that you are must be the dominant part of your persona when you go on this date.

In other words, you need to make sure that you just be yourself.  You can still be yourself and prepare questions to combat nervousness.  You can still be yourself and get into the shape.  Personality wise however, you need to make sure that your date sees the real you shining through.

Your date agreed to go out with you.  They agreed to see you and if you want the relationship to last long and remain healthy, they need to form a connection with the real you.  You don’t want to start out any relationship based on a lie, so just be yourself when you date and things will be easier for everyone involved.
