Keep the Taste and Reduce the Fat with these Cooking Methods

How you prepare your food is the trick to eating healthy, yet tasty foods.  Once you learn these cooking methods, you will be a pro at cooking to minimize fat and maximize taste.  These are all cooking methods that you have likely heard of, but there are some tips you may not have learned.

  • Grilling - When grilling, it is important that you do not dry out the food.   A great trick to this is to pre-cook the meat in the microwave or in the oven before you put it on the grill. Lean meats are great for the grill, as the fat will drop into the drip pan.   To preserve flavor, marinate meat, poultry, and fish and then baste them regularly.  Pay attention to the flame on the grill as you want to ensure the food is cooked at an even pace.
  • Stir Frying and Sautéing – The difference between stir frying and sautéing is that you use a cooking pan for sautéing and a wok for stir-frying.  Use just a small amount of healthy and unsaturated oil like olive, canola, peanut, sunflower, or safflower.  You can also simply use a cooking spray.  All the food is prepared in one pan.  You will not have to add in a lot of sauces or herbs for flavor, as the veggies can create a tasty flavor when they are all cooked together.
  • Stewing - Put all the ingredients into liquid.  Put a lot of veggies and meat into the slow cooker.  Use lean meats and lots of herbs for taste.
  • Roasting – This is a great way to cook an entire chicken, fish, ribs, or turkey.  Consider using meats that have a little more fat on them.  Roasting is known to dry out the meat. Retain the flavor by covering the roasting pan.  Also, add in herbs and spices to give the meat some flavor.

Regardless of what type of cooking method you choose, trim the fat and take off the skin.  Simply do this by using a sharp knife and cutting off the edges of fat.  When you are roasting meat, place it on a rack to allow the fat to drip away from the meat.

Adding Flavor without the Fat

Sacrificing flavor does not have to be inevitable when it comes to cooking to minimize fat and maximize flavor.  There are many healthy alternatives to high calories flavorings, such as:

  • Chopped herbs
  • Sesame seeds
  • Flaxseeds
  • Walnuts
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Almonds
  • Hazelnuts

Simply ground up any nuts and seeds to create a coating to use instead of using flour for breading or rub them into the meat.

By using the right cooking methods and healthy alternatives for flavoring, cooking to minimize fat and maximize flavor can become second nature, and you and your family will enjoy tasty and healthy meals.
