The 17 Day Diet - Day 5

It’s Day 5 and I’ve lost 3.5 lbs.  Not bad, huh?!  I feel great, I have plenty of energy and I’m rarely “hungry” although I admit I’m still craving SUGAR and CARBS.  The longer I go the more the cravings subside and I keep reminding myself that I will see a potato again – just not in the next 12 days!

I did miss the gym today – it was raining and it’s Southern California (It rains so seldom here we rarely go out in the rain) but I have an appointment with a trainer on Wednesday.

The 17 Day Diet does not mean you can lose all the weight you want to lose in 17 days!  (Don’t I wish!) The reason it’s called the 17 Day Diet is it was initially created to help keep people from gaining weight through the holidays.  It was later developed into four, 17 day Cycles, structured to cause “metabolic confusion” by adjusting food intake and habits at regular intervals.  The idea is that the body will burn more abdominal fat by varying calories consumed.

This is not a fad diet.  Although it does promote quick weight loss at first it’s based on lean proteins, vegetables, fruit and eventually whole grains.

Here are the four Cycles:

Accelerate: This promotes fast weight loss by eating low carbohydrates and “cleansing” the body

Activate: This is a metabolism boosting cycle where the metabolism is “re-set”

Achieve: “Good” carbohydrates are introduced into the body

Arrive: A lifestyle eating plan that combines the first 3 Cycles

On the First Cycle you can eat all you want of the following proteins, they’re referred to as “FREEBIES”:  Salmon - canned or fresh, Sole, Flounder, Catfish, Tilapia, Canned Light Tuna, Chicken Breast and Turkey Breast (boneless, skinless of course), Lean Ground Turkey, Eggs (No more than 4 a week or 2 per day), Egg Whites are unlimited.

You get 2 servings a day of a probiotic choice: Either 6 oz of Sugar-free yogurt, 1 Cup of Kefir, 1/2 Cup Breakstone LiveActive cottage cheese or 1 Cup of Low-fat Acidophilus Milk. (Basically the acidophilus milk is just low-fat milk with probiotics added to it the same with the cottage cheese). Oh, or ½ cup Sauerkraut as a serving of probiotic.

No other dairy except fat free cheese, fat free sour cream as condiments and in moderation. Vegetables are limited to “Cleansing Vegetables”: Artichoke and Artichoke Hearts, Asparagus, Bell Peppers (all colors), Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Garlic, Green Beans, Kale, Leeks, Lettuce (all varieties), Mushrooms, Okra, Onions, Parsley, Scallions, Spinach, Tomatoes, Watercress.

And condiments and spices as long as there’s no sugar in them – no barbecue sauce or ketchup unless sugar free!

Things I’m working on:

You’re supposed to have a cup of warm water with lemon in the mornings – I add Truvia to mine although you’re not supposed to.

Dr. Moreno says no Diet Soda and I have to admit I’ve had a couple but I’m trying to keep it to a minimum.

Green Tea is supposed to be added to your meals but I can only drink a cup or so a day.  It seems to upset my stomach.  Sometimes I mix it with “regular” black tea or have it cold. I still haven’t come up with a Green Tea combination that works for me.

AND 8, 8 ounce glasses of water a day (I still have that “floating” feeling from so much water and don’t dare drink enough on days I’m going to be in the car).

  1. Anything about seeds on the first cycle so I'd say no. I will have to check the other cycles but if you just started I'd say "no."
  2. This 17 day diet is a lot like AdvoCare, just without all the pills. Anyway, I use to drink a TON of diet soda a day. Like 6 a day! Now, I drink nothing but Spark by Advocare. It's AWESOME and does just what I need! Even though I no longer do AdvoCare (I lost down to 130) I still drink my Spark daily. Good luck to all you guys that are on the path to weight loss. The key is eating the right foods all the time. Not that this diet isn't worth it....I mean, any diet that teaches people how to eat right in #1 in my book!
  3. Are sunflower seeds okay to eat?
  4. OK, now the weight is dropping off. For me, the key was only using 1 tblsp of Olive oil a day and not 2. I feel great and the exercises don't hurt anymore. I can really see myself at my goal possibly by the end of the first 17 days. I may decide to go for it and go down another 5 lbs after that. When you get older you don't want to loss too much, for you face losses it fat and could make you look older. So I will feel it out.
  5. I hope I am understanding this right. Pretty much you can eat as much lean meats as you want, right? Lastnight I was like a bottomless pit. I just couldn't get the full feeling. I had turkey bacon, a slice of ham, cauliflower and carrots, an apple and beef jerkey. Oh, yeah, and two sticks of string cheese and a sugar free fuse to drink. I told you......BOTTOMLESS!!!! Is that terrible? Like I said, I haven't got the book yet so I am not positive what is okay, I have just been going by what I am reading on the blog. I didn't get on the scale this morning. I don't want to get into that pattern of weighing myself everyday again.
  6. How easy would it be for 1 person to do this in a household of 2? My wife is a picky eater and usually doesn't eat a lot of fruits and definitely not yogurts.
  7. Shari, what happened is I found someone provided the information on one of "their" sites and once that happened I thought since "they'd" made it public it was okay for me to do that too! Right? I hope so. It might come back and bite me in my big behind! I didn't give away anymore information than what I found there. I've been having my one soda a day but it's best not to of course. I have it in the evenings when usually I'm eating with both hands! LOL
  8. So I thought you were not going to give all this information? :-) I'm not complaining LOL! Just wish I would have read it before I ordered the book Ha Ha. Oh well, I think it will be a good book to keep around for the next weight loss challenge. I just wish I could find an alternative to diet soda. The carbonation really helps me feel full. Diet soda companies are like cell phone companies they know us Americans are spoiled and just have to have them. Ugg!!! I said I wasn't going to get on the scale but I did today (day 3) and I lost two pounds from yesterday. I didn't weigh the first day, I didn't have the gutts to step on the scale. After I had my 17 month old daughter I lost 75 pounds. After these holiday's I gained about 12 pounds back so I am trying to lose as much as possible before I get pregnant again. If it happens as fast and the first one I won't be on the 17 diet too long. Ha Ha. I know I really need to start eating better than I have been the last couple months though so I figured it wouldn't hurt to start it. Thanks for everyones advice an encouragement. WE will do this, WE will learn to eat better and WE will succeed!!!!
