The 17 Day Diet Frequently Asked Questions
- Will heating or Freezing yogurt affect the probiotics? Freezing causes them to go dormant. Once thawed, either in the refrigerator or by body heat, they will become active again. It will have a different look and texture after freezing but that's ok. Heat does kill them. Freezing is okay!
- I’ve been having a headache or dizziness since starting the diet, is this normal? People who have just started dieting on probiotics often complain of a mild, dizzying headache during the first few days. I’m not a Dr. so I don’t want to diagnose your headache but you may cut back on the probiotics and see if this helps.
- I find the yogurt SO confusing! There is no such thing as sugar-free yogurt – they all have some natural milk sugars. What you want to avoid are “added sugars”. Just check your ingredients and make sure that there isn’t a sugar thingy thrown in there with it! Make sure you read the yogurt part again. He says on page 45 “Yogurt, any type, including Greek-style, sugar-free fruit flavored; plain; and low-fat.” The ideal solution is to get Greek Style (more protein) plain, non fat and add your own berries, fruit or sugar free jam or preserves. I think everyone is getting hung up on the sugar free part. The important part of the yogurt is the probiotics. It’s made from a dairy product so it will have carbs in it. You want to find the yogurt that has the most protein (Greek Yogurts have 2 times or more the protein then regular) The more protein it has the more it keeps us full and happy. I use CARBMASTER which includes fruit but is only 3 or 4 grams of sugar. This is an excellent choice.

Dr. Mike did a live internet chat on Friday night.
Here are my notes taken from Dr. Mikes live show on Friday night, answers many questions asked about the 17 day diet:
- IF you have or have had anemia the Green Tea could affect you…if you’re on your period don’t use the Green Tea – he should have mentioned that in the book! That’s a pretty important thing to note.
- IBS: Okay to use this diet
- Type 1 Diabetic should be more cautious on this diet. Type 2 it’s perfect. If you have Type 1 the Dr. says it’s safe to do the diet but be cautious with your blood sugars. And I say, check with your physician to be certain.
- He said this over and over: It’s appropriate for everyone – “this diet is appropriate for everyone” But in the book he says “it’s not for breastfeeding moms” This was a little confusing and I’m not a Dr. and I don’t play one on the internet but I do think the first Cycle especially is too restrictive for nursing moms. Again, check with your physician.
- Vegetarians: Lots of options… proteins beans eggs dairy milk cheese
- Gluten free will work with this diet too.
- Constipation: Tied into Green Tea (the book should have said this) Use something over the counter Laxatives or back off the green tea. Usually this is a problem in Cycle one for the most part.
- Symptoms of headaches, tiredness, night cramps could mean not enough water
- Crystal Light or other drink flavor aids are okay as long as there are no carbs and no sugar
- You won’t lose as much weight in the subsequent cycles
- In Cycles where you increase carbs keep a serving the size of the palm of your hand and always have them earlier in the day.
- Exercise is 150 minutes a week
- Kids under 18, 300 minutes a week
- Higher cycles need more exercise
- 30 minutes a day – 10 min. three times a day – 15 min. twice a day – Anyway you break it up is fine. Just keep moving
- Alternatives to green tea: Supplements
- Increase your exercise if you have a plateau
- Cranberry juice instead of Green tea: A man on the show said he used unsweetened cranberry juice 1/3 juice to 2/3’s water for flushing because he hates Green Tea. The Dr. said this was okay. Again, could have mentioned this in the book!
- No half and half in coffee – But I’d suggest using Almond milk or Soy milk. Non fat or low fat
- He also said Sugar free Jello and pudding is fine although one is no calories (Jello) and the other has calories. If you use them use them sparingly. I would not use the pudding in Cycle 1 and keep the Jello to a minimum.
