The 17 Day Diet - Day 1

It would seem with all the work you put into choosing the “right” diet, reading the book, making the lists of acceptable foods, going to the grocery, picking a start date and making the COMMITTMENT that the first day you should be able to step on the scale and weigh 5 pounds less, right?

No.  Wrong.

So, today I start the 17 day diet.  190 pounds.

I can’t say with the 17 day diet or with any diet I’ve ever started that I’m very happy on the first day.  Am I hungry?  No.  But eating when I’m hungry is rarely the problem for me.

Deciding to change your eating habits, whether it’s to lose weight or to have a healthier lifestyle, starts in your mind and in your kitchen.  Sometimes you have to start with little changes and work your way into a lifestyle.  You don’t just run a marathon the first day.

First I had to decide what to do with all that food in the kitchen I will no longer be eating (out of sight, out of mind) so I cleaned out the pantry, fridge and freezer and threw out all the baked goods, “white” foods (rice, potatoes, corn, pasta) and anything with corn syrup. I also got rid of any processed foods.  You can give the food to a friend, throw it out or donate it to a food bank.  For now the important thing is to just get it out of your kitchen!

I made a list of “acceptable” foods in the first Cycle of the 17 Day Diet and will keep that in my car for quick reference.  After the grocery I went home and made a pot of the vegetable soup in the book.  I didn’t include the chicken.  The soup can be eaten any time I feel hungry or just want something warm and comforting.  It’s only veggies.  I made mine with chicken broth, crushed tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, onion, okra and celery.  It’s simple to make and tastes delicious.  You can always add cooked chicken if you feel the need for additional protein.

Then I went to the gym.  Yes.  Yes I did.  Was it easy?  NO.  It was cold and wet and raining.  Not typical Southern California weather and now that I think of it I don’t think I’ve been out in the rain since 2005, but I did it.  I pushed my pitiful self into the car, drove to the gym and worked out until I couldn’t take anymore.  I knew that it was important to start the habit of working out.  So I did 45 minutes with weights, 20 minutes on the “Dreadmill” (aka, Treadmill) and ended by doing 120 sit-ups.  Ugh.  It will get easier but today it almost seemed impossible.  But, it wasn’t, I did it and it will only get easier from here, right?  Dr. Mike only asks that you do a minimum of 17 minutes a day of walking but for me exercise is important.  I need it. As much as I don’t like to exercise I know I feel and look better when I do it.

Oh, I also had the trainer at the gym measure me but I forgot to get the measurements from him.  I’ll post those at a later date.

The only other issue for me today was my intake of fluids.  I just don’t like water.  I don’t like it.  Period.  But fluid intake is an important part of this diet to flush out toxins so I’m trying.  I probably fell short of the 8 - 8 ounce glasses but I’ll do my best to make that my goal.

  1. im like you, i just dont like water, and I just stay away from it. but sadly, as my life would have it, it has landed me in the hospital a few times. Make sure this doesn't happen to you. Im rooting for you!
  2. Isn't the author of this book a part of The Doctors..a show that Dr. Phil's son Jay controls? I think they are trying to sell more books, ratings, and keep getting richer. This book says what ALL diet books say....eat healthier foods, excercise....nothing new.
  3. Hi Lori, No in fact I'd say there's nothing "special" on the diet. Now, if you buy the chicken sausage or turkey sausage it might be a little more (sometimes I buy it for ME and not the whole skinny family) but mostly it's lean protein - chicken, fish, turkey, eggs, veggies and fruit. As with anything the more varied your menu is the more expensive. If you can stick with chicken, turkey, eggs, veggies and apples you can really keep the cost down.
  4. Are the foods listed in the book expensive or hard to find?
  5. Hi Peggy, No, honestly, no secrecy! Because it's not "my book" or "my diet" I can tell you how I'm doing on the diet, what my journey is, what I personally feel the pros and cons are but I can't give you information that's in the book. That would be plagiarizing. If I WAS the author I
  6. Are you going to list any of the allowed foods, meal/menu plans or your daily menus? I haven't seen any of this information posted in your writings or any articles on this diet, which makes me suspicious. Are you associated with the author in any way?
  7. Expecting my book today. Looking forward to starting on January 2nd. Good luck to everyone!
