P90X Pull Up Bar

We will be presenting two p90x pull up bar reviews here. Kenny and Gman.

Kenny's P90X Pull Up Bar Review

One of the most asked questions on our P90X forum is which pull up (chin-up) bar should I purchase for the P90X program?

I went with the official P90X® Chin-Up Bar last year just because I wanted to be sure I could do all the different grips related to the P90X program.. Other than a few issues, the chin-up bar has held up very well. Here is a list of my Pros & Cons.

Pros

The different grips on the Chin-up bar is specifically made for the P90X program. You have your inside and outside grips for all the pull up routines so you can do the wide, narrow pull-ups. Other pull-up bar that I’ve seen do not have the inside grips.

The P90X® Chin-Up Bar feels very sturdy. I weight 215 pounds and I never once felt the bar would collapse on me. The bar is not permanently installed to the doorframe so you can take it out anytime you like.

Cons

The chin-up bar can do some minor damage to your wall and doorframe. The pads on the chin-up bar seemed to wear out soon and the screws would scratch the walls. This could be fixed by buying some kind of padding or you could do what I did and tape paper towels on the cushion.

The last thing I dislike is the clamp that connects to the wood frame.  It is made of rubber and will over time it will dent your frame, a good way to fix this is to use tube socks for support, (see picture below) I don’t believe this problem is isolated just to The P90X® Chin-Up Bar.

Conclusion

I believe the P90X® Chin-Up Bar is an excellent choice since it is made specifically for the P90X program.  It can cost a little more money but I believe it’s worth the price.

GMAN - P90X Pull Up Bar Review

Introduction

P90X is a very famous brand name at the current moment because of the myriad of weight loss methods associated with it.  There are many P90X workouts that are truly intense and part of many of those workouts are pull up (otherwise known as chin up) exercises.  The P90X pull up bar is designed to facilitate those pull ups, although the general consensus within the marketplace is that it is not as good as it could be when it comes to that purpose.

Basic Design

If you watch the advertisements on television or YouTube regarding the P90X pull up bar, what you will see is supposedly a revolutionary product.  The P90X pullup bar is supposed to attach to any door without any problems and then be used with the normal pull up motion.  Once you are done with the pull ups, all you have to do is detach the bar from the door and then store it away until the next time that you use it.  No fuss and no mess are the two key phrases used with the marketing of the P90X chin up bar as storage is easy when you can fold it and slip it under either the bed or the sofa until tomorrow.

Stability Concerns

The basic design of the P90X chinup bar sounds good, until you realize that as soon as you take the product out of the packaging there are already concerns with the way in which the design is supposed to work.

If you take a look at what is included in the package with the bar, you might be a bit disheartened to notice wall brackets in the setup.  The presence of wall brackets as well as the screws needed to affix them to the wall seems to suggest that the P90X pull up bar is not as sturdy on its own against any door as the company manufacturing the product would have you believe.  In the end, the brackets are not actually needed if you place the bar on the door properly and exercise in a controlled repetition manner, but at the end of the day the brackets and screws still need to be included for legal reasons.  Whether that makes you less confident in the overall design of the bar is ultimately a personal decision that only you can make, but the facts are there for you.

Customization Concerns

One last concern worth mentioning about this bar is that customizing it to different door types is not as easy as you might think.  The bar is designed for standard doors with space between the top of the door and the ceiling.  In newer house designs (especially in townhouses) where the door goes flush to the ceiling, this bar will not work.

Conclusion

All in all, the P90X is still a decent design as far as pull up bars go.  It is however not the perfect design that the company maintains it to be, because of the problems mentioned above.  If you feel these problems do not preclude you from getting maximum benefit out of this design, it is still a good purchase to make.

  1. P90X is a great program and anyone who sticks with it will enjoy impressive results. The program is definitely heavy on the pullups though, and you need a good, solid, versatile doorway pullup bar to get the most from p90x. This bar is a bit expensive, but it looks like it'll do the job just fine. Thanks!
  2. These bars are great for P90X and I got so much stronger using them!
  3. P90X is awesome! I bought a chin up bar that looks exactly like the P90x bar. It is sold by Amazon.com. It works perfectly, quality is great and low price includes delivery.
  4. Haha - I hear you man. Good luck.
  5. I ordered the P90X bar last week. I should have it in the next day or so. Thanks for the advice. I'm in a new home, and the last thing I want to do is have damage to a door frame and give my wife an excuse to yell at me! ;-) Thanks for the good info
