Equipment needed for P90X - Required and Optional

Is there equipment needed for P90X?  This is one of the most commonly asked questions for this workout program.  There is P90X equipment needed, and it can be divided into two categories:  required and optional.   While there is equipment that you must have to perform the program, the optional equipment will enhance your workout experience.

Required Equipment needed for P90X

There is equipment that you will need in order to complete the full program. P90X has high quality equipment that you can purchase; however, a different brand could work provided the equipment is made from high quality materials.

  • Chin Up/Pull Up Bar – A pull up or chin up bar is recommended for full range of motion.  If you are not able to do a pull up, you can use a chair for support.  The P90X Pull Up Bar is a durable piece of equipment that is mounted to your doorframe.  It has 12 grip positions, which makes it an excellent tool for chin-ups, as well as pull-ups.  It is used to strengthen, as well as develop your shoulders, back, arms, and abs.  It can hold up to 300 pounds.
  • Dumbbell Weights or Resistance Bands – You will only need to choose one or the other; however, it is highly recommended by users to have at least one set of dumbbells on hand.  We recommend you buy a set of adjustable dumbbells.  This will be the cheapest route and take up the least amount of space in your home when not working out.  However, if you have a variety of weights, these will work, too.  P90X Strength/Resistance Bands are also available; however, there are other resistance bands you can purchase.  Just be sure the resistance bands are high quality, as cheaper made resistance bands could break and that is dangerous.  Many p90x workouts are actually more effective with resistance bands so you may want these and dumbbells.

Optional P90X Equipment needed

If you are ready to enhance your workout and step it up to the next level, these optional items will help you to increase the intensity of the workout.  Some of these items can improve your overall health.

  • Push Up Bars –   These are highly recommended by users.  Any push up bar will work; however, Tony Horton has designed Push Up Stands and Power Stands.  Both of these items are sturdy and comfortable.  The Power Stands have thick padding, which is important as there are a lot of pushups in the P90X.  Those who have purchased these items generally start off with the Push Up Stands and then move to the Power Stands.
  • Recovery Drink – It is very important that you use a recovery drink of some kind after exercising.  Without using a recovery drink, you could experience muscle fatigue, lack of increased strength, prolonged soreness in your muscles, and lack of increased muscle mass.  Nutrition that is ingested after working out and up to two hours after can improve recovery time significantly.  Any recovery drink will work; however, the P90X recovery drink works very well.  Chocolate milk is also a great recovery drink !

More Optional Equipment needed for P90X

  • Yoga Mat   - We highly recommend you get a mat.  When we performed many of the p90x workouts our feet would slip without the mat.  We also found it more confortable for anything where you need to lay down such as many of the yogaX moves, ab ripper X and others. 
  • Yoga blocks – If you are not extremely flexible this product almost becomes mandatory.  You can work without it by using your legs or making your own blocks but these are so cheap I’d suggest buying a couple.
  • Heart Monitor – This is important to make sure your heart rate is staying in the zone.  You also don’t want your heart rate to get too high as this is dangerous.  So we really would recommend you get a heart monitor watch.

Before you purchase your p90x workout program, make sure you have the equipment needed for P90X so you can begin the program as soon as you receive it.  Good luck and bring it!
