Jillian Michaels, the infamous trainer from the Biggest Loser reality show, is known for her tough workouts and even tougher disposition. She is an author, trainer and motivational speaker, but more than that, she is a person that struggled with weight loss before finding just the right moves to transform her body. Today, she passes her years of expertise on to real people who want to lose weight. The 30 Day Shred DVD is 60 minutes of fat burning workouts. There are three complete 20 minute programs included on the DVD. Each of the programs includes a warm-up, strength training , cardio, abdominal training and a cool down. The workouts are progressive, which means Level 1 is the least demanding and Level 3 is the most extreme.  

The Level 1 workout included on 30 Day Shred does not ease the user into fitness. Jillian commonly uses the Biggest Loser contestants as her source for inspiring the DVD user. If a 400 pound contestant can do jumping jacks, why can’t you is her mentality. The exercises on the 30 Day Shred DVD move smoothly from one to the next without breaks or rest periods. There are three body areas focused on with each DVD.  

  • Strength – Developing the core muscles is key to great physical fitness and injury prevention. The 30 Day Shred DVD works on strength the majority of the time.  
  • Cardio – After core strength exercises, the 30 Day Shred DVD moves straight into cardio.  
  • Abdominals – Moving back to the core for the last minute of each round, Jillian focuses on the abdominal muscles.  

Intensity From the Start

One of the key aspects of the 30 Day Shred workout is the intensity. Even self proclaimed fitness gurus feel the burn from the Level 1 workout and require weeks at the starter level before progressing to the next stage. Not only is this great for the body, but also for the wallet. Its takes an average of two weeks at Level 1 before users move to Level 2. The time frame between Level 2 and Level 3 is even longer. That means a complete set of workouts on one DVD for less than $20 USD can last longer than a month’s gym membership and cost a fraction of the price.  

It is important to note that while the 30 Day Shred is touted as being “Amazing!”, “Awesome!” and “Wonderful!”, the workouts are very intense on the knees and joints. Jillian Michaels offers alternative moves for the most impacting exercises which is the path many people should take for the first few days or even weeks using the DVD. All fitness movements begin with the core of the body. A stronger core means more energy diverted to the arms, legs and shoulders. As the core muscles become stronger, the intensity will not be as overwhelming to the user.

  1. I LOVE this workout! I finished it and lost 6" off my tummy, which was my biggest problem area. I have only done it once, but I am absolutely going to do it again! It is amazing!
  2. The 30 Day Shred is a great workout DVD! It is as easy or as hard as you make it.I have been using this DVD for 8 months,with no dieting.I have lost 50LBS and 32". Jillian is a great motivator and this workout DVD cost me 6 bucks at WalMart.All you need for the workout are a set of weights and a mat if you are exercising on a hard surface. o
  3. I first started doing this workout as "moral support" for my wife. But after doing it once I was hooked. I workout on a very regular basis, and this is one of the more intense workouts I have seen in a while. This is definitely better than most of the other workout videos out there right now.
